Anybody got any HP and torque numbers on this. Was this a good year, good engine. My memory serves me that this was a very good strong engine. Any input appreciated.
They rarely die, run for ever, but are very hard on fuel.

1996 F-250 extended cab long box five speed. Home made Tymar, 203 Stat, 60 gal in bed fuel cell, 315/75's, no muffler, ebpv welded open 3" to 3" DP, Babies. 290K, still chugging, and still smoking when cold.
UPDATED 1/1/09 Replace so far. 1 LUK flywheel+clutch, 2 thermostats, 2 set of brakes, 1 set of calipers, 5 CPS, 3 sets of tires, 2 Transfer pumps, 1 Injector modual, 1 Computer, 2 Alt, 2 sets of batteries, 1 Water pump, 6 Belts, 1 PS hose, 2 Sets ball joints, 2 set u-joints, 2 carrier bearing, 2 Speed sensors, 1 oil pres sender, 1 temp sender, 4 sets of e-break cables, 1 front fuel tank, 2 rear fuel tanks, 2 set of glow plugs, 7 Glow plug relays, Oil galley o-rings, Turbo pedistal o-rings, EBPV o-rings, 3 sets of Injector O-rings, 1 Vac-pump, 1 new carpet, 1 total paint job.Total $$$ in repairs v/s miles driven = 4.6 cents per mile. Add fuel to that it jumps to 16.5 cents per mile over the life of the truck.
"Good" is relative. The 460 was originally built as the 429 as a high performance car engine. It was not designed for truck use and is not as durable as some of the older engines (FE series for instance).
Really the only thing it has going for it is cubic inches. It is no better or worse than the other V8 gas engines available at the time. Personally I prefer the 300 I6 or diesel (both of which are purpose built truck engines).

I had a 1990 F-Superduty dump truck with a 460 EFI, 5-speed and 5.13 gears. the GVWR was 14,500 but I would haul 20,000 lbs with it daily, np problem. the truck had tons of power, but it would only get ~5 mpg, loaded or empty it didn't matter!! the 460 was a torque monster, but didn't like to rev high, I had an employee bend 2 pushrods in the truck trying to hot-rod it. I also put a 2-chamber Flowmaster on it and boy did it sound badass!!

Yessir, they are double-tough. A very heavy duty engine. One of our mechanics quit our shop and was working at home and I gave him a hand and we did a complete overhaul on a 460 from an F-250, '81-'87 era. I was impressed with the size of the con rods, crank, big valves, bearing sizes, etc. In fact the internals reminded me to an extent of the 534 (543)? huge Ford heavy duty truck engines that were used in some 10 wheelers. But like Mark says, they're mucho thirsty. A guy I drove truck for after retirement had one in his '91 F-250, and he had a fit when he asked about my '91 diesel fuel mileage compared to his wonderful 460's 9MPG.

well, I have sort of a different experience than some with the 429/460 engine.
I had a 1972 F350 DRW, with a 360/4spd. Typical problem: wrist pin came loose and got into the cylinder wall.
Truck was still good, so I went to a guy who parts out cars. He had a 69-70 Lincoln Continental. It had a 429(he said... I was told later it was a 460). I still believe it was a 429; open to persuasion with facts, though.
The manual listed the HP as 365. I seem to recall the torque was around/little over 440 ftlbs. It also was auto equipt.
I put that combination in that 350.
POOOWERRRR!!! compared to the 360. It also got much better fuel mileage. I recall it was around 10 empty...7-8 with a load.
I really liked it and would do the same again.

Don't exaggerate, they are great on fuel.......10 mpg highway 8 city. [img]/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif[/img]
They do actually run good.

I've seen that a few times, but IMO you really can't fault the engine. Usually someone didn't expand the keeper enough when required, or didn't properly seat it in the groove. If installed properly, it's about impossible for it to come out.
I know these large block Fords are great engines...but I have heard of this several times (of course, there are MILLIONS of these large blocks manufactured).
I have ran the 390 AND the 406 in the mid-60s.
Strong, but still not a HR427!
The 'cross-bolt' 4 bolt main in the 427 made it a completely different version of the Ford.
I even got a ride on MR ED, the drag boat, with the SOHC 427 on the Kings River in Central California area....great days!

My 88 F250 (bought new) 460cid.EFI 5speed (o/d). Gave me over 100K mi. reliable svc. Hauled my 9.5ft Bigfoot (o/h slide in/heavy) camper many thousands miles. Was hard on gas, but was a great/strong runner. JMO!
Never blew anything, but my 03 6L sure did.
btw...I also got great svc. from my 300 cid (BIG) inline 6 in E150.

Yea, if you were going to burst a hose, the water pump bypass hose would be the one. After getting the old one off, you can squish a new one end-ways almost double with needle nose pliers and install it without pulling anything. On some, the steel nipple is too long, but it can be shortened with a hacksaw blade first, then you can go the needle nose pliers route.
I had a 1987 F250 with the 460 motor. The motor was probably the most reliable motor I have had in a truck. I bought it new and ran her for 10 years and 195k miles. In that time I replaced the carb and water pump. It would get around 6 mpg unloaded and 4 mpg towing or hauling a load. It was a real work horse. The only reason I sold her was she would not pass smog in cal. The motor was still running strong. The motor was designed to run on regular leaded gas and in California it was switched to unleaded a few years after I bought her.
