Looks like either part number 55 or part number 84 in the diagram you linked to is a tensioner. The diagram is not very clear but one of the two pulleys toward the center that is NOT attached to a blade mandrel (the tower that goes through the deck and the blade mounts on) is an idler pulley and the other is a tensioner pulley. You will need to relieve the tension either by levering the tensioner in the direction that loosens the belt, removing the spring that provides the tension or removing the tensioner itself (usually a bolt through the tensioner into the deck that the tensioner pivots on).

There are several ways to skin a cat. One way is to almost-remove the mower deck, move the deck closer to the engine pully, put on the belt, then push the deck back to where it belongs and reinstall it.

Before you do that, make a diagram on exactly how the belt wraps around each pully. Then hang onto that diagram. That's about the only page in my Owner's Guide that I ever use.

I don't know about a Craftsman, but on both my older and newer John Deere "lawn tractor" mowers, there are only 4 pins to pull to disconnect the mower deck from the tractor. Then it's fairly easy to move the deck closer to the power pully and put the belt over the power pully, then push the deck back to tighten the belt. Using bricks or chunks of wood to get the deck just the right height, I can then connect the 4 pins and insert the keeper keys into the pins. I often do that chore by myself, but it's easier with Darling Wife helping to nudge the deck a hair this way or that to line up the mounting pins.

I always remove the deck to change or sharpen the blades. It's much easier than standing on my head to do it while it's mounted on the power unit. And the blades must be sharpened at least once per season, and replaced after about two or three seasons. So removing and re-mounting the deck becomes a routine job.

Belt Routing Is Easy. Guess I'll Hafta Drop The Deck. May As Well Sharpen Blades Too.
