Valuing a salvage vehicle

Got an older Toyota pickup that is ready for the scrap yard based on some frame rot.

The rest of the driveline has about 140K on it and runs like a top. I've had it for 8 years and maintained it well mechanically. I'd still be driving it today if I wasn't concerned about the safety implications.

Called some local bone yards and they've quoted me like $300 for the truck.

Knowing full well that they'll sell it for parts for 10X that much, I'm feeling that it's got to be worth a few more $ to them.

How does one go about finding the "true value" of a vehicle for scrap, considering there is no KBB value for such a truck, either for sale to a bone yard or for private sale for parts?

Other than parting it out myself, any rules-of-thumb for how to get rid of such a vehicle?

Um, just a suggestion, but how about taking it back to the dealer? Is it newer than a '95 model?

No, this is an 87 that I'm replacing with a 98 Tacoma. When I was looking for the Tacoma, I quickly found out about the "recall" Toyota has on the frames. Thankfully the one I found is in very good shape.

Interestingly, Toyota is buying back the Tacomas with rust perforation for 150% the KBB value in excellent condition. Up to 15 years after delivery, no less. Awesome deal.

I don't know about prices in your area but here in the central valley we have a "chain" of auto salvagers called "Pick 'N Pull" When my buddies LTD Crown Vic wouldn't pass smog any more they offered him $30.00 for the car IF THE TITLE WAS CLEAR! When he asked they said that that's the price they offer for ANY car/truck. I donated my '86 gasser (F-250 460/C6) to the local community hospice after about 125K on the clock with way too many mods to list here. they sold it for $800.00. I gave that much for the radiator/fan/geardrive/cam/valve springs three months before. We would all like to think that our stuff is worth more than someone is willing to offer. Just remember that the salvage yard has to make business costs and may "sit" on your truck for months before any body needs a part from it. Anyway just my .02

Find a local Fire Company, and ask if they will take it for training. Typically you can get a $600 tax deduction. Keith
