The “big rig” driving habits DieselFan describes are very similar to what the “hypermilers” do.

Good luck with that exhaust pipe, Dreadnaught. Big exhaust never did me any good that I could measure.

i just want a big exhaust. i can get pete parts cheaper than i can get aftermarket exhaust parts, so thats what im using. it will come up through the left side of the bed where the normal exhaust runs through, and go into dual 5" turnout stacks. nothing tall, just barely high enough to be seen above the roof of the truck.

as far as mileage goes, ill be getting a diesel jetta or something of the like from an auction for mileage and keep the p-stroke for crusing.

I bought a little Ranger awhile back.It gets around 22-25. Got a pretty good deal on it. My buddies fathers truck. Then the Firestone blew out and really tweeked the r rear quater. Thanks to the roving band of Walmart gipsies I got her beat back out. A friend of mine with a tranny shop has been filtering out the used fluid and has been burning that. He started out with a gallon then two, now all trans fluid. He also has a old army generator he uses to save power in the summer that also burns the fluid. he has offered many times but Ima skeered.I have ready acess to red dye, but again, Ima skeered. Im leaving for Utah in a couple weeks on vacation pulling my 5th.People at work think im crazy for still doing this but have you checked out the prices to fly? They ask,"have you figured out how many miles and the cost? Its like, Why? I know it will be costly, but what the heck will it matter 100 years from now? I need to get away. I drive my stroke on the weekends and once a week to work,75 miles. Im thinking about getting a older Mercedes diesel. They're dirt cheap and will about run on about anything. Cracks me up, people who dont understand the diesel thing. You hear "man you check out the price of diesel"?like they have something over you because they drive a Yucon. My truck still gets way better mileage then your heap, plus I can pull something besides the tent trailer that you do.

I definitely put more time on my snowboard than I do on that jet kayak. Plus someone using a powered kayak is going to use it for a much different purpose that a sportsman hitting some whitewater. The little jet boat is great for going about 20 miles up a river to pick berries or hunt or check out the glaciers or hit little tributaries for some trout and salmon. I would consider it much more economical to run the jet kayak than a river boat for one man to get some fly fishing in on a river that is road accessible. I have several snowmachines but I definitely ride bicycles more.

Wow, I have been a "hypermiler" all these years and never knew it. People are always laying on their horn to let me know that I am not accelerating fast enough. I slow down even more.

2000 Excursion 4x4 factory police (SS) special 20/15mpg. Currently get 23/17mpg Just rolled 70K miles.
Rear wing gave me 1 mpg. Mud flaps took it away.
4” DP to 5 exhaust gave me ~1mpg.
Air intake gave me ~1 mpg.
Super chip took away 3 mpg. Took it off.
CPS did zip. Change fuel filter every two syn/mix oil changes. That helps. So does Wax.
90 psi tires gave me ~1 mpg (no they don't wear wrong – they wear perfectly even)
2 oz Acetone with 2 oz Zylene and 4 naphthalene mothballs per 10 gallons gives me 2~3 mpg
Two gallons of WMO (filtered waste motor oil) per tank gives me ~? Free mpg I am about to go 50% WMO as soon as I get the 1 micron filter and wash system together.
Almost free four gallons homemade biodiesel per 44 gal tank mixed with ULSD (for lubricity). Gives me Free MPG.
Steady sea level Interstate no load operation at 57 MPH results in 26 MPG - If I took off the mud flaps and removed the extra front leaf spring I think I would get 28MPG - maybe 29 with the air dam back on I lost off roading.
Been driving the 1965 Falcon more lately. Gets about 28/19 which is about the same as the A8 – 27/18.
Telecommute more but there is always that mid day meeting that pops up...

Stay home more too. Saves fuel and bar tabs.

Congress is silly a waste of time. I know. I lobby once in a while.

Yes, this is a hobby.

Put some real nice high pressure street tires on the mazda today. Had the car aligned and made sure it was running tip top. Im going to be practicing the driving techniques taught by the nations hypermillers. I have always used some hypermilling techniques just need to dial it in a bit.

Response to high fuel prices

I pulled the trigger and purchased a Kymco (Kwang Yang Motor Co) People 250cc motor scooter. I've only put about 50 miles on it, still breaking it in, but am using it for short trips to doctor or Wal-Mart and for general running around in Geezerville.

From others on the web, I get the info that this is a 60-70 scooter: 60MPG at 70MPH and 70MPG at 60 MPH. Time will tell... but it will beat the 13MPG I get on Momma's gasser and the 16MPG I get with my diesel dually.

Anyway, I'll use it when possible and keep both of my Ford crewcabs parked as much as possible.

Yeah, im seriously talkin to the missus about a scooter. Id love to get a prius but my mazda is paid for and it runs pretty good. Hate to jump into another car payment when the fuel savings will be less than 1000 per year.

limit - Definitions from Dictionary.com

Professional drivers, at least those driving Class 8 rigs, go slower to be more profitable. Their time is more valuable when they're better-disciplined drivers who do the math. Example:

60 mi/hr:
Daily billable miles: 600
Daily revenue: $750
Fuel consumption: 6 mi/gal
Daily fuel cost: $400
Gross daily profit: $350
Daily wear & tear on truck, tires, driver: 600 miles' worth

75 mi/hr:
Daily billable miles: 750
Daily revenue: $937.50
Fuel consumption: 5 mi/gal
Daily fuel cost: $600
Gross daily profit: $337.50
Daily wear & tear on truck, tires, driver: 750 miles' worth

It's just an incidental side benefit that they're safer, more relaxed at the end of the day, retain more of their hearing, buy fewer tires and their trucks last longer and depreciate less.
I actually agree with you Dr. Cambell. Let's look at yearly figures

100,000 mi a year, 5mpg, $4 gal fuel= $80,000 annual fuel cost
100,000 mi a year, 7mpg, $4 gal fuel= $57,140 annual fuel cost. $22,860 more in your pocket and a lot less wear on truck. Now when you figure that most drivers actually run closer to 150,000 mi a year and that fuel is at about $4.60ish a gal. is makes no $en$e to run 75mph.

I slowed down to 65mph when fuel hit $1.50 and now I'm at 58-62 depending on load/wind conditions and I average 8mpg +. I run the same mi as I did at 75, except now it is less stressful and I can run longer with out stopping as much. I know there will be some drivers who will chime in that their truck gets it's best mpg at 70-75mph but until the law of physics is proved wrong I won't beleive them. I have had several different trucks with different configurations and ALL got better mpg at lower speeds. I have to go now as I have an extra $22k to take to the bank.

Each day, every day and all day. They can shove their "sweet spot" and "gee I've still got more gears" arguments. this has been proved time and again. If you are going 40 mph your wind resistance is (X), if you double your speed to 80 your wind resistance is (4-X) NOT 2 X!!!!

This applies for a Ferrari or a Peterbuilt!

Check out the cost of tires lately? Your tires will last longer at 55 than 75!!!

Since this thread started I've gone from

20% WMO/80% #2 to

90% WMO/10% #1

Civil Disobedience? Our PSD's burn a whole lot cleaner than the criminal factories that burn the WMO for steam. 50 cents a gallon works for me just fine. I feel like a hero and a patriot. Yea me.

Reduced the amount of time I did my gasoline powered vehicles.
I switched to diesel power about 2 years ago. Started running/testing wmo immediately. Use 90wmo/10whatever now in my truck and purchased a Mercedes and run it at 80/20. Use the gassers whenever I "have" to.
2 years ago i was paying $600/month for fuel. Now its in the $100 a month range because of the occasional gasse runs.
