WIN 2000 sp4 question

was trying to delete 2 files and the error message said "files are corrupted" and it could not delete it. then i tried to send it to the recycle bin, but no go. then i couldn't find the recycle bin on the desktop. don't think the delete file and lost recycle bin is related because i went back to a restore point and it wasn't there either.

1. any idea how to delete these files? i tried diskcheck and it also failed to run when it hit those files.

2. how do i get another recycle bin on the desktop?
i cant find it anywhere.

thanks in advance

johnm

Re: WIN 2000 sp4 question

John,

Right click on the desktop to create a shortcut to the Recycle Bin. Browse you way in Explorer to the Recycle Bin which should be the last thing in the directory tree after My Network Places.

Re: WIN 2000 sp4 question

You can download a program called "BC Wipe", it will delete things that Windows will not. It's used to "wipe" things such as financial records etc completely off the hard drive so they cannot be recovered.

Re: WIN 2000 sp4 question

PENTASTAR
its not an attribute problem, i can access that thru properties. it appears to be in a bad sector. i'm trying to share the folder on the net and it wont because of the corrupted file error. i have a file shred program and it won't stomp that file again because of the corrupted file. BTW i downloded the unlocker and it had a conflict with sme other program and locked up the computer. had to ctl-alt-del to restart.

PRDATR
i'v tried the search option. it came up with tons of files and the only recycle files were 3 hidden system files. didn't think those are the right ones.

Re: WIN 2000 sp4 question

I can see signs of a failing harddrive there John.It appears that you are having read and write problems. It might be time to start thinking about backing up your data.I would run SpinRite on the drive and see what you come up with. The problems you are having are very common to a marginal drive. That file unlocker utility will work on a file that you cannot change the attributes on,like a corrupted file.It has worked for me in the past.Ron G

Re: WIN 2000 sp4 question

right.. i was trying to back things up this morning and found other problems. i have another drive that i'll put in its place. guess i'll have to use the old burn it to a crisp to secure the data that was on there. lots of student ID and SSAN's from my teaching days. also have a lot of the standard tests with answers so can't let that stuff get out.

paranoid?
probably...goes with the territory of PTSD

Re: WIN 2000 sp4 question

hi
thanks for the help. do you have a program that does data recovery?

a long time ago i had a 10 gig (4" high on aaan 8088 processor machine) drive that the motor burnt out. we took it apart and replaced the platters on to a working drive. it worked, but have no experience with data recovery in bad sectors. just curious as to how it's done now.

Re: WIN 2000 sp4 question

I have saved a lot of drives with SpinRite. If the drive will boot to a C prompt there is a chance that we can get data off of the drive. There is other recovery software that excels in certain areas depending on what you are trying to save.Sometimes it is a hardware problem and other areas have to be addressed.I have saved drives struck by lightening to recover many hours of work and pictures of family history and geneology. That is very rewarding work to me on drives that I would otherwise discourage any attempts at saving.Lightning will take out the electronics on the controller board and if you can find another identical controller board, sometimes you even need to get the correct firmware revision for this to work but ebay can be your friend if you have the time to search out the identical board for your drive there is hope.
I have not changed the platters but I could and would if that is what it takes. There are no guarantees of course but it is challanging work and intricate work for those of us so inclined.Ron G

Re: WIN 2000 sp4 question

<div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Quote:</div><div class="ubbcode-body">thanks for the help. do you have a program that does data recovery?</div></div>

I've used GetDataBack with some success. If you're losing sectors, you might be able to save everything that's not on a bad sector. if you have a corrupted partition table, then it's going to be more challenging.

GetDataBack has separate versions for NTFS and FAT.

<div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Quote:</div><div class="ubbcode-body">a long time ago i had a 10 gig (4" high on aaan 8088 processor machine) drive that the motor burnt out. we took it apart and replaced the platters on to a working drive. it worked, but have no experience with data recovery in bad sectors. just curious as to how it's done now.</div></div>

This is they way it's still done, if necessary, but you pretty much have to do it in a clean room now (think "clean room" as the ones in billion dollar chip fabs, with bunny suits.) the data density on modern platters is so high, and the head fly height over the platters is so small, that any amount of dust can wreck everything.
