I recently recieved an offer on my 5th wheel camper but it had the stipulation of selling my 2001 7.3 truck with it. Well I would really like to get rid of the camper so if the price is right I may go for it. Now if I do that I need another truck so I have been looking at an 08 Ford PSD. What can I expect perfomance wise compared to my 7.3? I've read where the mileage seems to be a problem with the 6.4 my 7.3 gets better mileage than what I have read on the new ones. Power wise what can I expect between the old and new. I currently run a diablo programmer on my 7.3 and it scoots just fine. The new truck will manly be pulling a 21ft bass boat and some equipment trailers. I anxiously await your opinions?
I never ran a 7.3 chipped. All of mine have been stock. 6.0 outran the 7.3. 6.4 outruns the 6.0. I believe the 7.3 was around 250 hp and 500 torque? Can't quite remember. 6.0 was 325/590, 6.4 is 350/650. Although the 6.4 doesn't have the dreadful turbo lag the 6.0 had, if you are used to a 7.3, you will notice that it is a little slower off the line. Just remember this- if you goose it to the floor from a dead stop, it WILL fall on its face. Feather it in at first, then mash it down. It's a computer thing. Play with different combinations for awhile and you'll find the sweet spot for your truck for offline acceleration. You will also notice that an '01 is alot louder and rides like a log wagon compared to the new trucks. Test drive one- you won't believe it.
For a bass boat you can probably get away with a single rear wheel truck. I highly recommend if you go that route to go with the F350 instead of the F250. Cost difference is minimal, and you get better payload and brakes. If you are used to a dually, then get one- I have been told the stability is better when pulling, and you won't like the SRW. Hope that helps.

I'd keep if it's been doing fine. The 6.4 is a fuel hog and more expensive to service.
For a 21 ft. boat a 5.4 would do fine. Not to mention a 7.3.
If mine hadn't had a bad case of rust coming.( bad body work from a collison) I'd of kept it. I would have kept it anyway knowing what I know now about fuel prices and filter prices.

Sldvr1: The 6.4 seems to be a very good engine. It's the other little problems that keep poking up. Nothing major, just little annoyances. Buy this new one, so far it seems to be awesome.

Keep the truck. All the new ones have some issues, some worse than others. Fuel economy sucks on the new trucks. Pulling a 21' boat is a no brainer for the 7.3. The 6.4 is overkill IMHO.
My brother keeps threatening to sell his '98 7.3. It's the very old body style and rides like an 18 wheeler, but it's got 200K on the clock with nothing more than normal service. It's not fancy, but it works and it's paid for.

Like I said Keep the 7.3 if it's in good shape and tell the guy it's not for sale. I'm sure he can find one somewhere. The reason he wants your truck cause he knows it's a hell of a truck.

brother, there's a reason why he wants your 7.3! i vote keep it. i really like the new fords also, and fuel mileage seems to be the only issue with them so far[ all brands really]. a friend of mine left an 02 for a carbon copy 08 model, claims the power difference hard loaded is slim, mileage is much worse. you have one of the most proven models on the road, if you happy with it, stick with it! besides, the 6.4 is soon to be axed, whats around the corner may be a better option.
