Question 08 F-450 4x4 Fuel Economy

It has been a while since I have posted . I have an 08 F-450 CREWCAB 4X4 W/4:30 FINAL DRIVE RATIO which is 5 months old. I have 6771 miles on it and until this week , I have been getting 9-10 MPG. I am now getting 11.3 MPG. My truck is bone stock. The only thing I have done to it is Tint my windows and put it a spray-in bedliner , and next week I am going to put in a Transfer Flow 98 GAL FUEL TANK. How long does it take to breakin the truck and what kind of fuel economy should I expect when it finally does ?

With your truck, you're there. 11.3 is about average for a 450 w/ a 4.88 rear. Might see 12+ with a 4.30.

Keep it below 2.2rpms & you'll see your best economy.

I scheduled my first oil change at the Dealer next week with 4,500 mile on it now, I always like to do the first oil change early and I'm also going on a trip so they can look it over. Also when it is in they are going to do the fuel tank recall and update the program, they are also going to do a few minor things, but that is because I'm picky. I have a F350 4x4 srw and on the highway, I get in the high teems for MPG, But I get below 10 in town and I'm hoping the update will change that. We will see and I'll post the results.

mine has 16000 on it and 11+ is about it. I have the 62 gal titan tank and can get 600 miles empty, 400 or so towing the RV.

The mileage is lousy. Three reasons.

Weight - mine weighs 10,000# and the Edge Insight says that at 70mpg engine load is approaching 50%

Aero - or a lack thereof. Above 50mph you are pushing air and the brick shape is a killer.

Emissions - the DPF adds significant back pressure raising operating temps. In additon the regeneration process injects raw fuel into the exhaust ports when the vales are open, burning the fuel but producing no power.

At 16000 miles mine is feeling "looser" but my guess is it will still be improving at 50,000 miles.

I've got 4:30 final drive ratio , I forgot to list that. I am hoping to see a little bit more fuel economy . I really can't complain , cause I've got one HELL OF A TRUCK , and I absolutely LOVE IT. That I reckon is the bottom line.

I've got the 4.30 axles in my truck. Early one morning on the way to work I kept my speed down to 60 mph. Fuel mileage stayed around 14-15 on the interstate. Most times it will settle down to about 11.5 mpg. The key to better economy is keeping the rpm's close to 2000 and speed around 60 mph. Real hard to do. These trucks are as aerodynamic as a brick. It's still the best truck I've ever had.

I just rolled over 14,000 miles on my truck, it is stock. I have changed the engine oil and filter four times, fuel filters once. Highway fuel miles at 55-60mph, have been averaging 12-13mpg, I live in a hilly area. Around town usually about 11mpg. I drive pretty easy, not known for "llok at me" jackrabbit starts. My 450 is a 9,000lbs truck that can haul 6,000lbs in the bed, 16,000lbs off of the bumper, 24,500lbs on the fiver hitch(it towed 22,000lbs without breaking a sweat). I don't use it for grocery shopping, work commute, taking the little one to summer camp. I got two fuel efficient Toyotas for that. When I need(want) to take the boat to the ramp or pack up the family, dogs, bikes, fifth wheel loaded down, for a much needed long vacation seeing America I got the finest tow beast on the market. Gawd, I love the F-450.

well not to knock you all , but I have a 03 F350 with 4:10 reend and i get 18 mpg but see 14.5 average . I have towed 24.5k across country with no problem
My dad has a new 450 with the 6.4 and 488 reend and is getting killed on fuel , and yes it is a heck of a truck for pulling . he is turning 2400rpm at 65 mph so he has to hold it down on speed

did a test the other day - Dumfries to Doswell on 95.

Had 100 miles on the trip ODO and was averaging 12.7mpg. Driving 65 with cruise on and the regen turned on. Regen lasted 18 miles and at the end of regen mileage was 12.3.

No chnage is speed or terrain.

What I have seen when test driving trucks recently...and keep in mind that these were all short drives, but indicative of "possible" fuel mileage...on several 450's, all driven at 60mph cruise control for several miles on relatively level terrain:

all trucks 4x4, automatic except for one manual tranny

brand new 4.88: 12.9mpg
10k mile 4.30: 8.9mpg (I think something was wrong with this truck)
9k mile manual 4.88: 14.1mpg (not very level terrain, ups and downs)
11k mile 4.88: 12.9mpg
30k mile 4.30: 16.7mpg
brand new 4.30: 13.4mpg

And yes, before you ask, all fuel avg gauges were reset at the start of the test!

I have an F450 with 430 rear. Now has 22,900 miles on it. I'm very light on the throttle and usually cruise about 60mph. Average mileage: around town 12.8 mpg , mixed driving 14.5 mpg , traveling on the pennsy turnpike 16+ mpg.

A few things I've done to improve mileage include: installed a bed cover , aways use stanadyne performance additive, switched to full synthetic oil, and just today, updated engine software to TSB 08-13-2

By the way, when towing the 34ft trailer I run between 60 and 62mph. On a recent 3,000+ mile trip, I averaged 11.0 mpg. trailer weight is 9,800 to 10,000 lbs.

I'm anxious to see if the software makes any difference.

Just curious what you do with your truck? It sounds like allot of truck for a bed cover and only pulling a trailer with a weight of 10,000 pounds. I would think a F-350 would be over kill for that but like I say just curious.

Reset before a regen on the highway running 65mph with the AC on, a 4.88 rear end, fuel addatives and syn oil from Amsoil, a bed cover and an S&B intake I was getting 12.5 mpg.

I'm starting to care less about the mpg the more I love driving the biggest, baddest tow rig on the block.

Banks tail pipe on the way. It will look better if nothing else, but is rumored to help when I'm doing 3000rpm up the mountain with my 19,000lbs of boat.
