Exclamation 08 F450 Transfer Case Broke????? Help!!

ok, i have an 08 F450 with 111,000 Miles on it.. the truck is used for transporting and hauling cars... well today on the way home with an empty single car trailer i was driving and i felt the truck start to shake, so i pulled over and took a look underneath of it and i saw a puddle of trans fluid, so i figured it was the transmission. i went to start the truck to check for further damage the truck started fine, no warning lights or nothing?? i then put the truck in every gear and it did nothing and i heard i slight grinding noise like it had no gears, later on the tow truck came and picked the truck up, and when he did, we noticed the transfer case was cracked??? and that is what the problem was.. how would this happen??? we can not figure it out? nothing was run over or hit?? any ideas would help thanks!!!

Sounds like something came apart from the inside but that is strange that you didn't hear or feel it when it happened. Once you open it up I am sure the problem will expose itself pretty fast. That is something I never hear problems with unless the truck is used for heavy offroading which yours is obviously not. Good luck keep us posted.

Sure no problem i will keep you posted on what happens tomorrow, i am waiting for ford to pick up the vehicle then its only a matter of time before we find out what really happened... In all my years of working on cars, trucks and seeing just about everything i could see go wrong with a vehicle i have never seen this! it is the craziest thing. The transfer case is resting on the support underneath and it just doesn't seem right that it would fall out? the truck had 0 problems until today, i will try and take some pix before the dealer takes it and lets me know what happened with it, hopefully they can figure something out because i don't think i should have to pay for something like that, and if i do i hope it's not expensive... ill keep everyone posted thanks

I have seen it twice before. In both cases the oil pump in the case went causing it to internally seize and the case just twists apart. It is a real sight to see. The case just shatters. Take pictures and post them. If you search in the 6.0 forum you will find at least one thread from about 6mo ago.

Did you feel a vibration before it broke? I would definitely take a close look at u-joints and double cardan joint in front driveshaft. It is common to find a joint in a shaft causing a vibration and breaking t-case or trans case. Have seen it several times.

There was a slight vibration right when i pulled over... I pulled over because of the vibration, Then i just found out more information... When the tow truck came to pick up the truck he didn't want to use a flat bed because he thought it would not fit.. So he came back and picked it up from the front Drove it two miles and said something doesn't seem right so flipped it around and grabbed it from the rear With a sling not even with a wheel lift!!! in the manual it says do not use a sling??? why would he do that!! i think they will be covering the rest of the damage because the front drive shaft snapped off cracked the transfer case completely apart broke brake lines throttle cable ate up a wire harness i will post pictures asap but it is really bad my transmission guy said he has never seen anything like this..
