Anybody see the article on the '08 Ford Super Duty recall. Apparently there have been a few vehicles with flames shooting out of the tail pipe from unburnt fuel making it to the particualte filter near the end of the tail pipe and then igniting. Ford says it is from leaking injectors and a cracked up pipe on the turbo. Don't know about you, but I like the "flames out the tail pipe," might get some of those folks who ride your tail to back off.

So we are trading rolling black smoke for flames out the tailpipe? This sounds interesting!!

I read about this this afternoon. The explanation from Ford was the cracked turbocharger shaft happened with outside air temperature 20 degrees below ZERO and no warm-up was allowed. The cracked injectors happened as a result of overtorqueing of the injectors during installation(does not sound like Ford's fault to me, though Ford reacted quickly when descrepency discovered).

Forgive my ignorance, but can someone tell me how their proposed flash is going to fix one problem without creating another problem?
I ask this because from my understanding, the exhaust is designed to generate the heat needed to burn the soot off. The problem with the flame happens when there's a fuel leak.
So Ford's plan is to retard the performance when it senses the extra heat that's needed to burn the soot out. So how is that a fix or even a bandaid? It seems to prevent a possible flame, Ford is compromising the design to burn soot in addition to the lose of performance when this happens.
From the way I see it, this problem is similar, maybe worse then the pilot injection that was killed in the 6L PSD because of all the romping and smoking.

So what the heck will a reflash do for a cracked turbo shaft and leaking injectors? Are they going to rob power to avoid replacing a bunch of injectors? I can see how the engine can be detuned until it reaches a certain temp but if the injectors were over torqued, the damage has been done and nothing short of injector removal and possible replacement will fix it. Not to mention a sub standard turbo shaft that might crack unless the conditions are just right.
I'm having flashbacks of the 2003 6.0 and Ford's crappy attitude regarding warranty repairs, but maybe it's just me.

maybe it was 10,000,000 miles of testing on 10,000,000 trucks ?
i find it very hard to believe that these problems didnt show up in the test mules.

First off, reading between the lines, I don't think they *have* a complete plan yet. It sounds like they are recalling the trucks to get a new calibration... that they are going to quickly try to write and test starting now! But if I understood correctly what they were saying, they would cut power *only* in the case of soaring (out of spec) temps in the DPF. In other words, only in the rare instance of a regen with a fuel leak, not during all regens.
So yeah, it's fixing the symptoms not the cause, but only in the rare set of circumstances that creates the flaming tailpipe. Kind of like a fire suppression system, but operating on the fuel source not the air source.
Not good, not good at all, but not what everyone's painting it as, comparing it to when they took pilot injection away to save the cost of new injectors. (A very sore point with me personally, by the way!)

I feel exactly the same. Mine runs so well that I don't want anybody to do anything to it. 6.0's and 7.3's were nice but I don't miss them after spending time in the '08.

Considering power is already reduced during a normal regen, it will be interesting to see how much more they plan on reducing it during these "special regen circumstances".
