Last time I bought an oil filter from Walmart, I pulled the Motorcraft and Fram filters out of the boxes and compared them. Not only were they identical, they had the same numbers printed on the bottom end of them. They didn't just look the same, they were the same.

^ There is a lot of undisclosed info to answer your question. Are you the original owner? Is this the first oil change you have done on the truck? How long has it been since the last oil change? What brand is the filter that came out, Motorcraft or aftermarket?

Back on topic:
I got my oil analysis back today. There was a lot of fuel in my oil, 3.5%. There was also a lot of wear from the motor. Blackstone said not to worry about any of these figures yet, since this is the first oil change and the motor is in the process of breaking in. They said that you'll see high wear readings in newer diesels as well as fuel, while the motor is breaking in the rings. They also said to not worry about it untill after 15K miles. I am going to do my next oil change at 5K miles, which should be around October.

Funny thing is Ford recomends a 10K mile oil change interval for the newer diesels. Older diesels were more often. Blackstone, based on my oil tests, has recomended 5K change intervals on my new diesel, and 8K on my 7.3.

That's really odd. I would let Ford know, just to CYA. Only thing I could think of is that it was a faulty filter. I would periocically just pull the filter for a while to make sure it is not happening again.

Maybe someone can clear things up for me, but fuel in oil implies that when you drain the oil pan, you'll get more than 15 quarts, correct?

I've got 23k miles on my 08 F250 PSD, and I've done all 5 oil changes myself. Each time, I got 15 quarts almost spot on, sometimes a little less because I use gallon jugs when I can't find the nice-and-easy 5 quart Motorcraft jugs at Walmart.

Point is: I don't see why there's more than 15 quarts coming out of the pan. And I don't understand how a high pressure and low pressure system can have their contents mix with each other. Can someone please enlighten me?

Like you I get around 14.75 qts out of mine as well. This means you and I are good to go.--drive the truck and enjoy!

If you are able to avoid stop and go traffice while regening and long idle periods then in my opinion you will not make oil unless there is another issue at hand.

So I would say you are working the truck and it is performing correctly at this time.

Unless Ford shorted me on the oil install from the factory, I did not get more than 14 quarts out myself.

If you put in 15 quarts and you get noticeably more out, you have a real problem. Even at my reading of 3.5% fuel, that is only an additional 1/2 quart. Also if your truck started from the factory with 15qts, you'll probably only get 14qts to drain. There will still be some oil in the oil passages, heads, and oil filter/housing.

If you are changing your oil every 5K miles you should see less fuel in the oil, plus with over 20K miles on the motor, your motor should have the rings better seated than mine. I bet with the same driving conditions and milage my fuel % would drop to around 2%. That is going to be about 10 ounces of fuel. Not enough to really notice in an oil change of 15qts.

I'm not questioning whether you know how to change your oil, but if you didn't remove the filter prior to removing your oil drain plug, you're going to get less than you should; probably on the order of 3/4 to 1 quart.

There has to be a logical explanation for the lack of oil. I wonder if it's possible that there was *too much* oil to begin with, and your truck burned it off or pushed it out somewhere.

I'm new to owning a diesel truck and wanted to change the oil for the first time. I've never changed a filter on the top of the engine before. I assume the oil has drained from the filter and all I have to do is unscrew it and remove/replace the filter element.

That's pretty much it. Make sure you use the new O-ring which comes with your filter cartridge.

Make sure to change the filter BEFORE you put the oil plug in or you will release about 1 quart of dirty oil back into the freshly drained oil pan. While mine is draining I change the filter & check fluids & check for signs of leaks.
