You guys are scaring me. I've been flirting with a dealer, but he insulted me with the offer for my 96. My F250 4 x 4 SC has had its problems, but the paint and interior is still beautiful, (Zymol twice a years guys) and she pulls down 16 mpg. 143K miles is half life on the veneralbe 7.3. 10K off the sticker is inviting, but...... , I want more off. The longer I wait, the better it will get. If anyone hears of anymore Tommy Vaughn 20k off offers, let me know.
Go to the TDR site and check out the threads on 6.7's. I just bought an 01 PSD to replace an '08 Dodge 3500 CTD 4x4. It was built in July of 07---- talk about a piece!!! I bought it on April 1, by the end of May and only 3000 miles, new turbo, DPF and assorted gaskets and sensors. As I drive it of the dealers drive it throws the code for turbo malfunction. After that first episode I was at the dealer once a week for the exact same problem. After episode 4 I invoked the Lemon Law and they are buyinng it back. It was a nice truck, but like others in this thread I refuse to be the R&D for the motor company and pay them $45,000 for the priveldge. I would rather drive an old diesel that is proven and like said elsewhere can be driven on anything. Not a truck that has to be driven hard (which goes against my will, I baby my trucks) and have to go to mthe dealer every week. They should pay me!!! I think that the DPF systems on American made pickups is a untested and flawed technology. How can the makers of the big rigs go 100,0000 before a DPF has to serviced and the pickups are a constant problem. Anyway, justmy $.02 and I feel for those of you with the problems. I won't buy a new truck again until I know that it works.

Naw, slammer03, the fun at Tommy Vaughn is over. I was ready to jump, but I was a day or 2 late, however. But, the more I drive my old truck, the more I find let her tough to let go. The ex got the 03 Explorer, and I got to keep my truck. My F250 is almost like my favorite dog to me. She has carried me through thick and thin, good times and bad, and has lots of life left in her. But, I've driven a couple of F350's, (just in case, you never know when you might need the extra leaf spring), and they are sweet. But I will go all the way this time, Nav, audiophile, maybe a crew with a sunroof, maybe not. I know that employee pricing is ending August 4th, but it will probably be extended. If not, I won't buy. I don't need the truck, I just want it.
Most dependable truck I have is my '93 CTD. Gets 18-20 MPG and the systems are so simple there is very little to break. Close to 160 K on the Odometer and it's my choice as a daily driver when I need a pick up.
I think the old 7.3's were like that. The race for more power and tightened emissions requirements have screwed up the new trucks. Sure, my '07 is great to drive. Comfortable, powerful, quiet, etc. However, you always wonder if today is the day the CEL will come on.

I agree with you 210, the emissions quest has taken all the fun out of owning a diesel truck!!!! DOH!!!!!!

I have a disagreement with the dealer about the value of my trade. So, for the day, I've borrowed his 08 Lariat 4 x 4 CC loaded for the day. When I hop in, the mileage is showing 12.2 mpg. I know that if I will drive it like I love it, I'll have it up to 15 mpg, no problem. After about 50 miles of egg under the right foot driving, I'm showing 12.3. Where did the mileage go? My old, venerable 7.3 got 16 to 17, day in, day out. Is a 25% drop in mileage worth it? The truck is very, very nice, however. A sunroof, on a warm evening drive is almost religious. Especially with the glow of the GPS and in a 1 ton truck.

You somewhat answered you own question...the reason most late 07-08 BIG diesel rigs don't have all the DPF/CEL issues is beacuse their 'WORKING' the engines. For the most part always hauling 80,000 lbs.
I know a few contractors that always pull heavy equiptment or, their F250/350 is loaded to it's limits...very little if any issues with the DPF or CEL. Other issues yes >radiators, injectors, gaskets leaking etc.
It would appear owners can't "baby" these new diesels ...their set up for 'WORK'...not getting groceries.

The value of your trade is severely affected by the current market--no one wants a truck like that. That's why you're seeing the dealerships struggle to sell their brand new trucks.
Anyway, you won't get it to 15 MPG off the lot. There's a few people here that swear they get way more than that, but I just so happen to have at least one coworker that I can think of right now whose experience matches mine: getting between 12 and 14 MPG.
My co-workers 2008 F250 CC PSD FX4 gets around 12 MPG bone stock. My 2008 F250 SC PSD 2WD has never gotten more than 14 MPG. I'm also bone stock.
