i read four diesel forums and water in fuel has been the major contributor to what you are seeing with yours
the best way to insure proper fuel management at the seller, is to only buy from reputable, high traffic locations. major brands generally follow a process to stop water from making it through the retail pump
A Ford Mechanic here in Anchorage works only on Power Strokes. He has a "wall of shame" in his shop consisting or fuel samples in clear containers that he has collected and names the stations they came from. You can see the contaminants in the fuel. He recommends one particular brand for fuel up here. I am about to retire with an F-450 and camper. Plan on taking a road trip throughout the states. Now feeling scared, I cannot aford a major mechanical issue. Wondering if I should downsize to a gas engine truck???

As said previously, I think using a major brand diesel fuel from a high volume station will go a long ways to protect your fuel system. If you are judicious about maintenance and fuel/lubricants while using Ford filters that should go a long ways to keeping the heartbreak of big money repairs away from your doorstep.
