2008 F250 Sooting pipes after trip pulling trailer. - Diesel Forum

Hello Everyone,
My 2008 F250 now has around 9,500 miles and we took it to Colorado pulling a trailer full of toys. Total weight was around 9,000lbs trailer + toys.

On the way out there I went from northern Oklahoma to Guymon, OK to Clayton NM, to Trinidad, CO, and on up towards Creede CO. Between Clayton NM and Raton it was over 100 degrees outside and we were gradually climbing in elevation. (I have and Edge Juice Attitude) and EGT's were consistantly running 1000-1150 degrees. Water temp was 204 degrees. We hit a cold rain storm and it poured harder than anything I have ever driven in. Once in Trinidad CO I went to fill up and noticed soot in tailpipes. A lot of soot. I had regened previous to Clayton NM a couple times, but hadn't had one in at least 150 miles. Did the cold rain crack my dpf?

Coming home from Colorado we came a different way. Canon City to Granada to Hutchinson KS. That trip was REAL hot. Outside temps were 106-108. Water temp would run 206 degrees, and get as hot as 212 pulling hills or if I tried to run closer to 70. Interesting thing here is I was regenning once per tank. Is that because of the heat? Causing more frequent regens? If I am regenning that often the dpf can't be cracked right?

Going out worst tank was 8.5mpg. Best tank out was 10mpg. Coming home worst was 9.5mpg. Best tank was 12.5. Overall average for 1750 miles was 10.2mpg. Is that good? Bad? Ugly?

Thoughts?

Since you were towing and burning quite a bit of full it seems possible that even with a cracked DPF you could still be regening that much. The rain could have caused a rapid fluctuation in the temp of the DPF, which seems it could have caused it to crack.

My 08 has been a smoker since day one. I have have almost 68k on it. I get regens every 250-400 miles since day one. I really think something other than a cracked dpf filter. My truck runs best right after a regen for about a100 miles then it falls off untill another regen occurs. I also have noticed a slow loss of boost. Used to hit just shy of 40psi and noe max boost is aprox 34. Dealer said 34 is fine. Im not to happy with my dealer in NJ.

I wish my DPF would crack! Less back pressure. I pull maxed out at 26K, and don't get a lot of regens when towing. Usually only one per 500 mile trip, if that. If you're regenning a lot, it's probably due to the Edge. I've never run a tune in mine, and that's because there's still a lot to learn about the 6.4, and I don't trust that all the tuners out there have done enough research yet to figure out the quirks yet. If a tuner is just dumping in more fuel that's probably going to plug up the DPF faster.

I have noticed this as well. Sometimes I'll hit 38-39 lbs, and sometimes it will only spike to 32-34. Loaded up, with the pedal to the floor, should we not always see full boost?

As for soot in the tailpipes I have none at all. My buddy's '08 has quite a bit of soot in the tailpipes, rather strange on a 6.4 with the DPF system. I get regens about once a tank.

I seem to be the odd ball here. Although I don't pull with mine often (yet- I will this winter) my truck has had only ONE regen I have noticed- at 6600 miles, and I have 8500 on it now. I would not have known that one was happening, except the message center told me. No smoke, no power loss, or any other irregular symptoms. I wonder if mt habit of running hard most of the time does this? You wouldn't think so, since diesels uncorked make more soot when run hard. I don't know, and I'd like to find out why my truck acts so much differently than anyone else's.
