2008 F350 help

Hello, I did try a search, but was unalbe to find what I am looking for... So I humbly come to you guys with my problem.

Here goes....... I have an 2008 F350 with 12,324 miles on it, it has dual exhust that being the only up grade. I have not pulled anything with this truck, on 3 occasions the truck has lost power and blown grey/white smoke out the exhust, I mean a lot of smoke! I have an appointment at the Ford garage on Monday (Feb 25), I live in a fairly small town and IMO the diesel mechanic is....welll lets just say crapy. Do you guys know what is wrong with my truck? Thanks!!!!

Did you cut off the DPF? Did you cut into the Y pipe for the duals? It is normal to see some white smoke, and to experience a loss of power during a REGEN. My assumption is you did one of the above, and the computer is confused because of a loss of back pressure and lower exhaust temps. I assume your fuel consumption has gone up as well? Let us know...but this is my opinion.

BTW, I think its funny Chevy is advertising on a Ford site.

It's been my observation that if you remove the DPF, you have to get a chip to help the computer cope with the lack of need for the regen.

I do not believe the DPF (what is that?)was removed, the exhust is after the particulate filter. Does this help? My son did the install, was told he did nothing to void the factory warranty. Thanks guys!

Your truck went through regen, which is when the computer elevates exhaust temps to clear the Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) of the soot it collects from the exhaust. If you don't know what that is, it's not your fault, but your dealer is in the same class as the mechanic. Look over your diesel supplement to your owner's manual carefully. It should explain what regen (or regeneration) is, and how to drive to allow your engine to complete its cycle.

I thought the white smoke during regen is caused from an excess amount of soot build up....which i don't know how you could have that since you don't tow with it but i wouldn't really worry about it much...all of the 08 lose power and suck fuel during regeneration mode....and i get a regen every 1000miles

Why would the fact that he does not tow with it make the pdf not clog up? IMO it would be just the opposite. If you tow with it regularly the exhaust temps would be higher therefore less unburnt fuel in the pdf.

I'd bet almost anything that your truck is regening alot more often than every 1000 miles.

The white smoke during regen is usually when the truck is not up to operating temps yet. My truck has regened way more than twice, but only two times have i had the cloud of smoke.

If this is normal... then would you suggest I still take it to the garage? Trust me when I tell you the mechanic is less that desireable. In fact 2 years ago he was a guard at the prison... I know you may think I am full of it but I just dont trust him, Tucson is 75 miles away and would be a hassle. I am greatful for the info!!

If this is normal, then I will just deal with it, if it is unusual I will take it in. Thanks again! Joan

About how often do they regen for? also how long do they regen for, is it a set amount of time or does it change every time?

Holy Cow Stymie, my Walla Walla neighbor!!!!
Mine did the EXACT same thing. It was almost like it needed a really good belch.
But my regens did go down afterwards and MPG's went up.
How odd.
