I ordered a 2008 F450 4x4 with the 4.88 ls axle. The truck came in today and I looked at the specs and it had a 4.3 axle. The dealer thought they had oreder wrong but then found out the the 4.88 was no longer available other than on a cab and chasis(I do not want that). My question is this...
I will be pulling a 5500 lb trailer with a 14000lb piece of equipment on it.(total 19500lbs). At most I will be pulling it 4 to 5 times a month. There is the possibly of having to pull a 16000lb piece of equipment occasionally, with the same trailer. I live in the south so hills are few and far between, but I am worried that "maxxing" out the truck could have severe consequences down the road..Any advice would be appreciated.
Ford has on their website that the maximun allowable trailer weight is 20,000lbs with the 4.30 axle, that is why I went with the 4.88, that is no longer available.
Also why would they all of a sudden no put the axle on the same truck with a bed and put on one without?
yougotme,,,your 20k toyhauler is that your max tow weight or do you tow a 20k trailer plus cargo,toys,etc..?? And are you completely stock as far as drivetrain goes?
Rockridge,,,,I am not doubting you about the 33k total. I ahev heard that from a few people but cannot find it in print or from Ford anywhere. any ideas? I just want to make sure that if something happens Ford cant say that I overloaded it.
You'll be fine.... the 4.30's are good for 33K total (truck and trailer) now
Talked to a reputable dealer in So Cal, the 33k with 4.30s is not true from what I have been told. Do you have documentation from Ford on this cuz I'm curious now
Another question,,,,does anyone bother getting a cdl?
i know that in law regulated cali you need a class A to pull anything over 10,000 GVW what the hell correct me if im wrong guys i want to pull 747s like parasails haha

33K GCWR with 4.30's is correct for all JOB 3 F-450 P/U's and is now the only ratio available. The high capacity tow package which gave you the 4.88's and the 33K GCWR has been dropped.
The following is from the most recent order guide...
The High Capacity Trailer Tow Package (535) is no longer
available. The standard max GCWR for F-450 PU with automatic
transmission is now 33,000 lbs. The standard max GCWR for F-
450 PU with manual transmission remains 27,000 lbs.

PowerstrokeHD,,,do you have any way I could get the info of where that is actually printed or a copy of it by email or other way? I believe you but my dealer cannnot find it, and if I have any problems I don't want them to think I overloaded it.

It's a PDF file, so after you get it, open it and print it out using Adobe Acrobat Reader. There are 12 pages plus a note to the dealer, so 13 pages total. The blurb you want is on page 1 under "Job 3 Order Guide Updates", supported by the Axle Availability chart on page 6. But lots of other good info on your new truck.
The order guide for the F-450 chassis cab is different. 4.88 is still standard in the chassis cab. But it's no longer available in the pickup.

SmokeyWren has this pretty well covered for you in his above post, but here is a direct link to the info you are looking for...
This is a good thing for anyone buying a new one now. Not only do you get better fuel economy but you also get the 350Horsepower and the 650 foot pounds torque and not the detuned engines. The new ones can pull the same weight but do it faster and get better fuel economy also. Now would be a good time to buy one.

Where did you get the info that the motor is not detuned? All Job 1 and 2 trucks are detuned no matter what the gear ratio. Why would they not detune the Job 3 trucks?
