How are you guys liking the new trans?? This may be the same model # trans but from what i understand it has been revamped for the new 6.4.
I have been reading that is handles a fair amount 4-500hp w/o any problems so far.
I'm thinking about a motor and trans swap and i'd like the extra gear of the 5R110. PCS has a stand alone controller for this trans and destroked has adapters, therefore I was considering it.
Motor wise, the mechanics @ the dealership told me to stick w/ the 7.3 so I might rebuild or drop in a cummins. Either way I'd love to use the 5R110 if it has become a solid tranny.
I don't quite agree with this. The allison duramax setup is the smoothiest in my opinion (we've got quite a few of these). That being said we've got probably 175 to 200 F-250 to F-550s, most are 550s running around at 19,000 to 19,500 lbs daily. Think of it this way, start up at 5:30 or 6:00 AM, run 100% throttle from home to the office, idle for an hour or so, off to work, run all day with the a/c on and PTO running at 1200 rpm in 90+ degree weather 75% or more days a year. End of day shut down the PTO and off to the house or office at 4 or 5 PM. Thats just one day, now repeat this 5 to 6 times per week. We have yet to toast a 5R110. We only keep them to 80 or 100K miles at most but haven't seen any alarming failures like with the 4R100 when we were putting a new one in at 50K miles. We do change the fluid every 25K miles which we believe helps add some life.

Do you guys think i would be better of having a built 4R100 or getting a 2008/2009 5R110? i can get the 5R110 for about 1500-2000.
I'd take the 5R110 over the 4R100 any day. The extra gear makes a huge difference pulling. I think that's the advantage of the Duramax and with the new 6 speed that ford has on the plate it should equal the segment quite a bit.

You have a decent tranny in the 4R100. I had one and it stood up to my tests of pulling my 14.5K to 15K no problem. It did much more but that is a fine start. That being said before you consider the coin to drop in a tranny you may have to mod the hell out of for a sure fit, consider this.
BTS trannies builds most likely the toughest tranny available and will back it with a very impressive warranty. That was my next move had I kept my truck..put that stud in and drive the wheels off of it. at least get on the web and look him up. He does that great of a job and he runs nothing but Schaeffer fluids too

4r100, horrible, first series 5r110, a little better , but stilla gear jumper and the towhaul mode would slam shift down. the 08 and up 5r110 had a batter computer program to it helping it to hold gears when hill climbing, but i still hear still hear of people burning them up. now i have not been able to drive one with a load with 3.73 gears or even 4.10 ( 6.4 with newer 5r110 set up that is) my f450 had 4.30 gears so that helped alot too. bet it would still down shift at the slightest hill with a load. if you want real reliablilty, and control over your truck get a stick. if you just want to sit, there and stab and steer get slush box video game tranny.

The 4r100 is a terrible tranny. I went through 3 of them on my 2000 cc. They don't disapate heat at all. I haven't had one issue with the 5r110 in my last truck or my current truck. Don't waste your money on the 4r100.

Transmissions don't dissipate heat. That's the cooler's job. If you were failing them due to heat you needed a better cooler. The early 2000 trucks did not have enough trans cooling.

you can't blame the gtra nny for lack of ridding the heat. that was a flaw in that engine tran ny combo. I replaced mine with a 6.0 cooler and never ran my temps above 200 even in 128 degree Baker California heat. My tranny had no problems..

I had an Allison in my '05 Chevy 2500HD, and this 5R110 is smoother, IMHO.
Tow/Haul feature works just as well as the Allison, but it's MUCH less obtrusive when towing.....it was the first thing I noticed when I towed with the SD. (My Allison was a 2005 with 5-speed.)
I can only add my experience with my previous truck. I did not care for the 5r100 in my '04 and it was the focus of MANY trips to the dealer. The end result was a ride with a area rep from Ford who agreed I had a problem. They attempted the 7th or 8th fix with no good results. Then Ford shipped in a "rebuilt unit" it couldn't pull my 9000lb camper under hard acceleration without slipping. I am now back in a manual transmission and happier for it.
I have read a lot about the later models ('08+) being better, but I can't comment one way or another on the validity of that.
