6.4 and 3.55 gears

Has anyone ordered and towed with 3.55 gears?

Does it improve the MPGs with the 6.4?

Does the 6.4 lug too much with the 3.55 towing a load?

Thanks.

I ordered the 3.73 rears for my crew cab drw swb truck and it's the same gearing my 2001 4x4 crew cab srw swb truck has and it seem fine when I tow around town with the newer truck. It should do the same thing other that the drw.

Re: 6.4 and 3.55 gears

3.55 gear is not a WORK/TOW gear in any of these new or old diesel trucks.

Re: 6.4 and 3.55 gears

LOL, don't tell that to 1/2 of the 94-97 PSD's either, the only options we had were 4.10 or 3.55. I've seen plenty of CCLB 350's with 3.55's and regular cabs with 4.10's, both regularly pulling trailers, go figure.....

The '08's are not available with 3.55's, BTW.

JOB3 '08 SRW trucks are going to offer 3.55's as a option.

Re: 6.4 and 3.55 gears

I think it is a great option providing your tires are not to tall. These trucks could use the milegae hike, it's not like the 6.4 doesn't make great power. I have a 250 with 3.55 gears, I could go for that ratio, as long as I could tow up to 13,500 with it. My under powered 250 gasser won't tow that much, but I bet a nice 6.4l crew cab could.

Job 3 trucks 3.55 is an option, as per Ford.

Re: 6.4 and 3.55 gears

I like 3.55 gears. OD puts you at about 1700 rpm which is great for light loads or empty and straight gear has you turning about 2300 which is great for heavy towing.

Re: 6.4 and 3.55 gears

Pulling on flats is one thing.Starting off with a big load and any kind of mountain grades is something else.If you buy one of these trucks to pull and work 3.55 is about as useless as boobs on a boar.I've pulled with 3.55s. Most miserable experiance driving cross counrty with 8k that I've ever had.Couldn't imagine a real load to pull with 3.55s. Plus its hard on a auto trans heat wise. With these 6 speed autos I would think 4.10s would be the way to go.

Re: 6.4 and 3.55 gears

My normal "big" load runs 13-14K (picture here) and I used to pull it with 3.55's and it was fine.

Starting was no problem with granny low.

Granted, I'd sometimes not be able to make an upshift on a steep mountain pass, but that is a very small fraction of my normal driving. On the rolling hills of Texas, the 3.55's were fine running in straight gear. With my '01 having a 6spd instead of the old 5spd, I'd be even happier with the 3.55s.

A standard transmission will run cooler, not hotter in straight gear compared to OD.

Re: 6.4 and 3.55 gears

I stand corrected! I didn't know about that option, sweet!

Of course, if they are offering a 3.55 gear option, does that mean we won't see the 6 speed auto for awhile longer?

Re: 6.4 and 3.55 gears

I've had 6 Ford/Diesel P/U's All have had 3.55 until my '03 and now my' 05... As you can see I still have my First one with 3.55's Pulls like a champ.. It will walk all over a 4.10 equipped truck, with no OD they stretch out too fast and dont pull well much over 55 m.p.h.

I pull the same trailers with both Trucks GCW, from 15,000 to 30,000+ My '05 does it with less stress but my ol' 6.9 uses alot less fuel doing it..

I Feel that 4.10's with stock tires should be banned by the E.P.A.

Re: 6.4 and 3.55 gears

I've pulled alot of miles at 30k and over with 3.54 gears in my truck. Around town towing would be better with 4.10s but most towing isn't in town. I think with the power of new diesels a 3.73 gear is perfect.
