6.4 Air Filter

I now have 63k on my 6.4 and I need another air filter. This will be the 4th filter! I'm going to try a wix filter to see if it will last longer. I dont want to change the airbox, but does anyone aftermarket offer a better/longer lasting filter? All highway driving.

I am going to change mine every 10k. What is happening with yours? I just turned over 10k and changed both fuel filters and the air filter. After removing my air filter, I did not notice any damage or potential for it to come apart.

Four filters in 63k miles? Change the filter every 10k miles? All I have to say is "why?" Why are you changing the excellant Donaldson filters so often? And all highway miles. This is my second PSD that features the Donaldson filters. I rarely change these filters under 30,000 miles. What replacement interval does your owners manual state? IMHO, changing out the filter at 10,000 miles is a total waste of money "unless" you work your truck in a mine, gravel yard, sand pits, ect... The Donaldson is probably the best designed air filter system available in a pickup diesel application. It can hold a lot of dirt and still function/flow clean air just fine. So if you wish to just spend money needlessly keep changing it out too often, but there is no need to. I have bought Wix filters for the 6.0/6.4PSD from Filter1.com in the past. It is also available in a Fram box(still a Donaldson filter) at Walmart for if memory serves me is around $60. I would not waste my money on aftermarket intake systems, they flow no better and certainly do not filter as well.

Say that until you're blue in the face. People will still disregard the manual's recommendations. This is just like the oil change discussions that I see everywhere with people insisting on doing it every 3k miles.

You and I both believe in sticking to manufacturer recommendations. Isn't it great saving money AND staying away from the stealership?

The Factory Air filter will hold up to 3 pounds of dirt. It filters very well, and it can handle 500 horse power. As far as aftermarket filters, if I was to get one, I'd get a S&B.

A dirty air filter removes more dirt (higher percentage) from intake air than a clean filter....trade-off is slightly higher restriction. But the only way You'd EVER notice that restriction is if You work the engine @ 100% of it's HP potential. I do change engine oil & filter every 3000 miles, and run oil analysis every 10,000 miles but run fuel & air filters substantially longer than the manual states. My truck runs 99+% of the time on highways, and I'm REALLY fussy about where I buy my fuel. I think the service I've gotten from My old PSD over the last 12 yrs & 296,000 miles shows My maintenance plan hasn't been too bad. The whole reason I ordered My truck out special 12-1/2 yrs ago was to reduce "Cost of operation per mile" It has exceeded My expectations.

I do my best to stay away from the stealership so I will continue to maintain my truck like that. Plus, I heard from a very good source that Ford is cracking down on injector replacements when the customer does not change their fuel filters every 10k. Not sure if they meant both filters or just the top filter.

Your "very good source" can't be very good... I work for a "stealership" and we have yet to receive this "message". If you don't maintain your truck properly, if you feed it stuff the engineers tell you not to... you might be in trouble... Overmaintaining is stupid...

All the same - ask a competent tech what he thinks of engineers....

I'm surprised no one has yet mentioned the importance of buying the blue media air filter over the white. I change my oil every 4K because it is exposed to excess dust. Also, Blackstone reports on my '05 6.0 showed significant oil shear at this interval. I have noticed that the 6.4 cruds up oil quicker than the 6.0 or 7.3. I don't think I'm over doing it.

Grampy- I'm into excavation and big underground pipe work. We hate engineers, too. They seem to make a simple system as complicated as possible, because they CAN.

No kidding. Doesn't the user's manual say to replace every 20k, not 10k?

People need to read the manual. It has nothing to do with engineers. It has everything to do with people refusing to read the owner's manual which was written by the people who designed the truck and thus know first hand what the optimal maintenance intervals are.

Let these people over maintain their vehicles. They're doing nothing more than throwing their money away AND best of all they are keeping YOU employed.

P.S.--I call them a stealership for charging the prices that they charge for the services that I'm fully capable of doing on my own without having to part with my vehicle for the day or longer. I haven't checked to see how much oil changes cost at my stealership, but I'll bet that it's no less than $100 and I'd have to part with the truck for half the day. Guess what? I bought 15 qt of Motorcraft 15W40 from Walmart for $30 and got a new Motorcraft oil filter for $18. Guess how long it took me to do the oil change?

You know... your user's manual tells you that you're supposed to replace BOTH filters at the same time, and not at 10k miles but instead at 20k miles.

You are correct, there is no mileage frequency for replacement; the manual says to inspect the gauge at mileage intervals (depending on which service duty schedule you are on) to determine if filter change is required. Also states to inspect the gauge and not depend on the dash message.

When the filter has enough gunk in it to draw enough vacuum to indicate it is plugged then it is time to change the filter. If the gauge indicates it is plugged you need to reset the gauge to verify same as if driving in snow or heavy rain the gauge can indicate a problem that will go away once it drys out. Manual also says you can drive up to 200 miles once the gauge indicates to change the filter.
