6.4 damage

Got my first 6.4 pulled apart. Came in with a miss on #8. Pulled the head and #2 and #8 pistons are burnt down the side. It's a 550 that was in the process of getting ready for the customer [bed and equipment installed] and has 216 miles on her. Got a call from International pretty quick but still waiting on the engine and I'm 65 miles from Huntsville engine plant [1 week and counting]. This ain't a "bust your bubble" post, just thought it would fit this forum. Anything mechanical is subject to tear up but, I'd just as soon this be my one and only. And we thought the 6.0 had lots of baggage!

Re: 6.4 damage

So what caused this ? Is it a fluke or is something else going on ?

Any chance you could post a few pics ?

How is the 6.4 to work on ? Did you pull the cab ? Does it take long ?

Re: 6.4 damage

What are you guys going to do with the VIN?

I mean, c'mon, you can't even fathom that some of these trucks/engines might have problems? A new engine...the first application of a new fuel system...lots of new emissions hardware....and you think some of them won't have issues?

Jay -- It's amazing. It reminds me of the inquisition, or Clarence Darrow on cross examination. Perhaps the criminal law burden of proof (beyond a reasonable doubt) should be required of all new posters and they should all be presumed guilty until they prove themselves innocent. Re: 6.4 damage

Not sure what you mean by "burnt down the side". Do you mean the piston itself is burned/melted down the side of it's skirt? Is the cylinder wall also damaged? Was there anything that happened prior to this event, such as does any suspect it happened during a regeneration cycle. Was it any more difficult to remove the engine(if the engine has been removed) than the process on a 6.0 powered truck? Curious why you added the statement about the 6.0's "baggage" to your post? It seemed out of place, and/or unwarranted.
