I think i am going to order the 6.4 because the 6.0 is a piece. In your opinions is it going to hold up to heavy hauling and off-road use on the ranch? I am going to get the F350 crew cab with a custom bed on it.
It's a bit early to say with any confidence but so far so good. My 6.0 was blowing coolant in the first 500 miles (no mods) in normal driving and got worse with hauling. So far with the 6.4 everything is perfect with 5400 miles. Some towing on the freeway and offroad I've done a fair amount of dragging debris away from our camp through sugar sand which puts a pretty big load on it and no issues at all.

Just make sure to carry a fire extinguisher with you and keep a sharp eye on it in tall grass.

Re off-road use of the 6.4, I have an '08 F450 (and used to live on a ranch in West Texas); previously had '05 and 03 F350's and still have an '03 Excursion - all PSD's.
Due to all of the emmissions equipment, the 6/4 is a pretty complex piece of equipment. Personally I'd be nervous about how well it would hold up over time in extended off-road usage. As far as I can tell, the GM and Dodge's fall into the same category.
Re heavy hauling, I've pulled 30K trailers (39K Combined gross) with my '08 F450 w/o any problems. I think that it's too early to make a statement one way or another regarding the durability of the engine though...
If you're going to be pulling a lot of heavy loads consider either 4.30's or 4.88's - I have the 4.88's. The mileage leaves a lot to be desired but the pulling power is much superior to my '05 F350 6.0 with 4.11's.

Agreed.

Just returned from a 3,000 mile trip with camper on truck and trailer in tow. Truck performed flawlessly . . . average speed was around 63/64 mph, average mileage about 9mpg. The Chevy I just traded for this truck was getting about 10mpg. This truck has much more power, much quieter, nicer ride and pulled all the cargo like it wasn't there.
That was well worth 1mpg in my book, especially when you consider my Chevy/Dmax had 3.73's and the F550 has 4.88's.
I spent plenty of time in dry grass with no fire ext. I think those who think you need one don't own a 6.4 and are probably replaying the old flame thrower video forgeting that issue has long been addressed.

Have you ever owned a 6.0?
Define "piece". If you're implying junk, you're incorrect. My 6.0 is simply marevlous.
Isn't it designed for "heavy-hauling and off-road use"?
