6.4L Power Stroke Engine and DrivetrainDiscussion of the 6.4L Power Stroke diesel engine and drivetrain in the 2008 Super-Duty trucks. No gas engine discussion allowed except on transmissions and drivetrain that pertain to all models. Please confine discussion of topics in this forum to those items that are specific to the 6.4L Power Stroke engine.
Check out Diesel Power Magazine July 2007. Should be available on-line to look at. They had a complete comparison between 6.4 PSD vs V10 gas engine. I won't spoil ending. I think they even did dyno comparison and drag raced them.
That's very reassuring. After month's debating with myself on which I should get. I finally decided on the diesel. But, in the back of my mind I was wondering if I made the right decision. This article confirms to me that I did.

V-10 gasoline mpg average 694.60 miles total/66.97 gallons = 10.37 mpg
Anyone believe they got 19.27 MPG with the diesel? Well there are a bunch of real world owners HERE on this site that think that's not really accurate.
Agreed the diesel will out tow the V-10 there is no substitute for big time torque but give me a brake on the 19.27 MPG. (I'm waving the BS flag)

I tend to agree with you. Every magazine article I read gives different stats that are much better than mine ( 11 mpg towing - 15 mpg empty ) however I live in the mountains so I figured they must live on the flat plains of the west. I have 8600 miles hoping to get better.
The way I am looking at it is, if they are off on the mpg of the deisel then they would also be off on the v-10 in the same proportion. Which tells me that if garyhill is getting 11/15 mpg with the diesel with his driving habits. If he had a gas. what would his mpg be? 5?

I looked at a thread HERE and here is what people that have one (or so they say) are getting.
11-13
10.4 mixed driving
11.9 city
16-18 highway
17.3 highway
11 city 14.5 highway
16.8 highway
6.5 towing 10.2 average not towing
13.5 city 16.5 highway
9 towing
9.2 towing
8 towing 14 highway not towing
8.5 towing
10.8 empty
15.7 trip 12.9 in town
That.s a far cry from 19.27
As far as towing a real big load our International full size trucks at full gross with DT-466 300HP and 7 speed Fullers get 10 mpg. And yes you can get them in a gussied up crew cab for less than the price of a F-350 dually lariat.

I can say that the 6.4 PSD that I have gets about 15 mpg driving around. I have a 1 ton GMC 8.1 that gets about 10 - 11 mpg, same driving conditions. Not a v-10, but it is a bigger engine and gas. And by the way, my stroker will out pull it without flinching. Its not really fair to compare any gas to diesel but these new diesels are not doubling up mileage. In my opinion.
Good article thanks for linking that, I like diesel also, that is all I own at the moment that is a regular driver. I was trying to determin if with the cost of diesel, and the mileage lack of difference now, that maybe a gasser would make sense to buy now. I really prefer diesel, but the economy advantage is gone for now, the power will likely keep me in it though. I am a cheapo when it comes to buying though, and was hoping I could be convinced a V10 would be fine. Towing up to about 14000 on the back, the V10 will likely disappoint still. Maybe when this new mega gasser V8 comes out things will change some. What kind of mileage will that get though, I am thinking less.

You're telling me that you think a magazine named DIESEL POWER is going to also inflate the V-10 GASOLINE engine's fuel mileage? Riiiight.

I think one thing seems to be pretty clear concerning the fuel mileage of the 6.4. It has a lower mpg than both the 7.3 and the 6.0. Why? The programming and the emission equipment. I bet if the 6.4 was outfitted with the exact emission equipment that was on the last version of the 7.3 it would do 22-24 on the highway and 12-15 towing. Too bad. It will probably get worse before it gets better.

I agree and all for a cleaner environment? Well if you're burning more fuel, you're emitting more pollutants! Simple math and typical government great ideas :vomit:
