I LOVE MY JOB 3 2008 FORD F-250 w/ 6.4 LITER. My truck had 500 miles on it before I hooked my new 12,800lb Fifth Wheel to it and took off. Loaded, it weighs a little over 14,000lbs. I have yet to have any issue with it yet! I just bought the Spartan Phalanx system so I hope that helps with the crappy mileage! **THERE ARE OTHER TRUCKS OUT THERE, BUT REAL MEN DRIVE FORD DIESELS!**
I still do like my truck and hopefully I will be in it again this Friday but the motor issues do concern me considering I have been pretty easy on it. I will have to give Ford a second chance now but if this motor even knocks and way that sounds out of the ordinary it will definitely be back at the dealership. This Friday I have been without my F-450 for 3 weeks and this is getting old.
Ok heres the results so far....I picked up my truck from Hagerstown Ford in Maryland ;ast Thursday. I left the dealership and about 20 miles later the truck overheated. I called the dealership and they sent out a roll back to pick it up,by now I am extremely pizzed. Fortunately I had a friend following me and I decided to go back home and cool off before I deal with the dealership. Well about a few hours later they discovered the top radiator hose clamp (a piece of wire) snapped off. The mechanic called and was very apologetic and I told him I would be back there in the morning.
Well after I picked up the truck and now added about 500 miles on the new engine I have to say that its never rans so good since the day I bought it (knock on wood) and hope it stays that way. The new engine came complete with turbos, wire harness,etc... and was pretty much just a drop in and bolt up unit. Well I am looking forward to adding up some mileage this year and getting some real use out of the truck
I don't know what some of the other guys on here might have concerning your question about automatic transmissions vs manuals, I was of the same opinion that you are for awhile. I told people I had owned two pickups with automatic transmissions: my First one and my LAST one!
However, before I bought my first 6.4 several respected Ford techs on the western slope told me the automatic transmissions now are better and tougher than the manuals. Three techs told me to go with the auto tranny and I would not regret it. I pull a 30' flatbed or a double deck stock trailer and a 48' race trailer with ours and they've not skipped a beat. With the Tow/Haul mode on with a heavy trailer I've been completely satisfied. We also have a '96 with the old reliable 7.3 and manual trans. Yup, it's reliable, danged good engine still pulling hard at 140,000 hard miles and I'll never trade it off but; it won't hold a candle to the 6.4s.
The upshot of all this: I would not be a bit hesitant of today's automatic transmissions. They're built Ford tough!
Thanks for the opinion / experience with the auto trans.
I've had a Ford dealer tell me the same, but I've also listened to an automatic transmission shop owner who says he sees Dodge's most and Fords' second of all the 3/4ton vehicles.
What fuel mileage are you seeing with your 6.4 automatic... empty and towing?
On a recent trip to Indianapolis and back to Colorado; about 2900 miles total I averaged 14.2 empty to Indy and on the return trip towing an 11,000 pound trailer I averaged 8.1. People do complain about the mileage compared to the pre EPA emissions mandates, however the towing capacity, power, comfort and ease with which this truck handled that trailer it's nickel/dime for me. All the manufacturers have to contend with the diesel particulates, EPA mandates that and current technology is such that we burn significantly more fuel to emit cleaner exhaust. Kind of like the banning of R-12 refrigerant, little coming from Washington DC makes a whole lot of practical sense but it makes the do gooders feel good.
I feel your guys pain. I work for a Mustang Performance shop and have always owned Fords all my life. Last truck was a 2001 F-250 cc, 4wd. 180,000 trouble free miles. My original plan was to buy a new truck every couple of years.... In my opinion the 6.0 was a bomb, (unless you keep it stock, don't tow and dont put a programmer on it). The 6.4 came out and I wasn't impressed. Superchips is about 5 miles from my shop. They bought three brand new trucks, new Ford, GMC and a new Dodge. After driving the Ford and the GMC there was no comparison. The GMC is hands down the better truck. I purchased a 2008 4wd cc, sb and have 24,500 trouble free miles so far. I tow a 16,000lb toy hauler on a regular basis. It gets 10-12 towing. Now, I have no DPF or Cat. 5in exhaust from the turbo back and a very mild Superchips tune. Before I lifted my truck and took all the fuel milage out of it it got 22mpg on the highway @ 65mph and 19 at 75 to 80mph. Around town, even beating on it it would never get below 16mpg. I am very happy with it so far. Lets hope it makes it to 180,000 like my Ol trusty 7.3 Ford.
Dear all, This started out as a thead on regens aftert he recall. Job 1 folks might rember that prior to the recall they never had the message about regen on the dash, buit it was doig it all along. I find it helpoful to not have to find out when I try to pass someone (forgt it!! when it is in regen) and really love that it no longer regens at idle - a pain and oil adder. Yes my 08 Job 1 450 regens every 170-200 miles, more if I stomp on it then let off quickly due to traffic; a bit less when pulling heavy loads like a grandma. Just think about everything that would make a pre-emission diesel smoke - that is what creates back pressure (plugs the PDF) to the point that alerts the sensor to regen...
Well my truck is still at the dealership but the Ford reps authorized the replacement of the complete motor and it arrived at the dealership yesterday. The motor broke a crank shaft and even the mechanics I spoke with there couldn't believe it.
What did Ford say was the root cause of failure?

All that was said to me was they never seen a crank break apart the way this did and quite honestly I don't think they could explain why. IMO it was a defect in the metal because it sure as hell takes a lot to break a crank shaft.
I don't mean to change the thread but mine is so sweet the best ever. 35K. Judgeing from the boards there isn't much going wrong with these 6.4's.
I sure wouldn't go backward either. Other than a simple radiator leak that was fixed under warranty...I couldn't be happier.
BTW, the comments from Pappy are always interesting. Sorry Pappy, your V10 is nice for sure...it's a Ford. However, your dreaming when you suggest it outpulls the 6.0 or 6.4. We needed a good laugh though, thanks.

The stick tranny is the same since they went to the six speed. However, out of all of my trucks, this one has been the roughest one. I still wouldn't trade for an auto- I hate them. I spend alot of time going slowly over rough terrain- and simply letting the clutch out and letting the truck crawl beats gunning an auto to get over every bump hands down. I heard Chebby won't even put a stick behind their diesel. If Ford goes this route I don't know what I'll do. I won't pay good money for an auto.

Was just informed yesterday.....after they had mine for two weeks, that the high pressure oil pump gear drive "blew" and trashed the motor and that Ford is supposed to authorize a complete new motor. Will probably have to wait another 2-4 weeks for Ford to come up with the replacement motor. BUMMER!

F350 DRW, 4:30 with 13,300 on it.
Tow a 30' Chaparral weighing13,500
it took two weeks for them to discover that? When my motor blew Ford did step up and ship the motor fairly quickly, the dealership had my truck a total of 3 weeks from start to finish and so far I am happy with the replacement but I am concerned that it could have the same problems in the future once I get the miles on it.
