I have my 6.4 and haven't had any issues with it. When you take into account the total number of vehicles out there since they came out with the 6.4 and look at the active number of problems being posted these days it seems to me the number is extremely low. Yes there are a few that get posted but the real question is whether they affect the entire fleet or are just isolated incidents. The fleet wide issues were taken care of about 1 year ago. I am in engineering and know from experience that there is a probablity of failures on everthing, and unfortunately some are going to be affected. The number of failures occuring that affects the fleet is the real question, and I just don't see any right now. I likewise don't like the idea the cab must come off in the event of certain issues, but that is going to be probably carried forward with the new trucks as well because these things are so big and keep getting bigger. At one point I was considering the extended warranty but with the low number of problem posts these days I am thinking about skipping it. I still have a few years to make up my mind on that one. Inside the truck can't be beat. The mileage is a pain but we all knew that before we bought them. The same for DPFs. The new 6.7 will certainly have its issues the first year or two.

I am a dodge owner looking for a better truck, I am on this planet to grab life by the horns and i have recently let go, and yes i did for get the question mark so here it is for u ? .....
The correction isn't for me, it's for you. Sloppy grammar makes you look like a Dodge owner.
It's nice that you like your 7.3, however since they are no longer available, and all the diesel pickups currently available have new emissions controlled engines, DPFs and slightly lower MPG, there isn't much point dwelling on how nice the old engine was.
I did not think I was "dwelling on how nice the old engine was" my point was to illustrate that I can't overcome the feeling that the 6.4 will not be as reliable as my 7.3s, no concrete evidence to support this feeling, just that when you are mandated by the EPA to clean up emissions and you add more systems to the powerplant there in lies the potential for problems. I like things simple-if it does not need it to run, is it necessary? Sorry, now I am dwelling But getting back to the original thread, this guy has a Dodge, is not too happy with it, rides around town, sees all these Fords and thinks he might be missing out on something, I just wanted to convey the message that not all of those Ford owners are completely satisfied with their truck. If you love yours and feel it is reliable than I am happy for you, I just don't have the same feeling. Mentioning the 7.3s was to let the Dodge guy know that the 6.4 is not my first diesel, and I have never doubted the reliability of the 7.3.

Reason: spelling
Why do you wonder everyday if it's going to die???
Because of the complexity and addition of the emissions systems, coupled with the fact that driving home tonight, it went into regen and when I pulled away from the stoplight it felt like it was running out of fuel. First time that has happened. As stated in my post above, I just don't have a feeling of reliability with this engine.

The only thing I do not like with my 6.4 is the regen issue.
Just can't stand it when I am close to where ever I am going and the "cleaning exhaust filter" message pops up. Then it's 20 minutes of driving around and wasting good diesel fuel.
But, the quietness and smooth power is a pretty good trade off.
Yes, as said above, keeping a 5k oil change schedule and required mileage filter change regiment, I see no reason why the 6.4 won't last a very long time.
It's definitely a nuisance that it seems to know the exact time you're about to arrive at your destination to go into regen, but you shouldn't have to keep driving to finish it. With ours it'll just pick back up on the regen the next time you start it up.
Drove my '03 Dodge CTD for 6 years and about 77k miles. About 35k of that was pulling a fairly light (9600lb) 5er.. no problems except for a broken recirc door on the AC... but, my current 5er exceeds anything Dodge makes unless you go to a CC... only got 6600 miles on my '09 F450 and only about 700 miles towing, but it has been flawless... fuel mileage.. well about 11-13 around town, 14.5 on the highway empty and ~9 towing my 16k+ 5er.. would I like better mileage, yes, but I can't ask for a better hauler in a pickup.... we are extremely happy with our choice...

As I posted earlier I love this truck, but radiator went today at 34500 miles. Just keep an eye on them. As someone posted before, there are two types of radiators for these truck: Ones that leak and one that haven't leaked yet.

I have the same mileage as you and just had a radiator installed Thursday.
Otherwise has been a trouble free vehicle.

Ha..I'm on my third radiator (job 1 tk)...but in fairness the 2nd radiator went before they had the purge valve issue fixed.
to the OP. i've owned a 02 f350 7.2, a 04.5 ram 3500 and my current 08 ford.
The fuel mileage SUCKS...but....its the quietest, comfy, nicest diesel I've owned.
and my first truck I have not felt the need to bomb. nice power and love the tranny.
no engine brake and havent felt the need for one even towing 15k fiver down a 6-8% grade...

let's compare apples to apple's here. with dodge and ford. i'am happy with my 05 model dodge for the most part, but it took owning 5 older models to get there. been happy with just about every ford i have owned, and most of the gm's. on a year to year basis, i never noticed a difference in the fuel mileage on most my trucks when equipped the same. for instance, the 00 model dodge i had briefly, and the 05 i have now, get no better mileage then my 02 ford. turn back the clock, and my 95 dodge only netted about one mpg better then my 97 ford did. anyway back to the apples comparison, most every 6.4 owner i know loves there truck, but hates the mileage. same goes for the 6.7 cummins owners i know, only difference being i have seen a few 6.7 issues, just as i have seen a few 6.4 issues. bottom line on failures, seen several 3rd gen 5.9 and 6.0 failures also, which would be more inline with the year of the thread starter's current truck. bottom line, you can have issues with all of them!

Well I went to Billings to do some shopping. I left my 2008 Mega Cab Dually (53k and no problems) at the Ford dealer and came home with a Lariat CC F350( It has a long bed! Hoo Hoo!). Dodge quality isn't Ford level. I have now owned 4 Dodges since 2000 all Cummins and they are nice trucks. They however are not Ford quality as far as trucks are concerned. I am praying that the reliability of this 6.4 will be much better than the 6.0 (owned 2 of them a 2004 and 2006) The 6.0 can't be trusted. Help me feel good about my purchase gents.

Just some advice that you already know about oil burners. With this 6.4 and the emissions stuff it can be just a little hard to get used to. If you just ignor the cleaning exhuast stuff and just drive the truck you will be far happier.
Once you get it broke in miles wise, hook up one of the heaviest trailers that you have and work that motor to get it broke in. sweet spot is around 1500 rpm's and 55-60 mph. That will be your best mpg area.
