6.4 Will be 2 - 3 Year Run!

I just came from a race event weekend. (All Ford). We had an exec. and or connected to Ford guest speaker.

Told us the 6.4 will be a 2 - 3 year run and there are already plans for Ford to step in after that and make their own again diesel (Catepillar?).

If there are ailments with the 6.4 and teething problems, they are geared up to step up to the plate and get the gremlins out early.

Re: 6.4 Will be 2 - 3 Year Run!

Weird...I know the 6.0 was a pretty short run...but 2-3 years and IH is out? Wonder what the tooling for the 6.4 cost em?

Why do you say Cat in your comment? If Ford made it wouldnt it be a Ford?

Sounds strange to me...if this has a shred of truth I would NEVER buy one!

Re: 6.4 Will be 2 - 3 Year Run!

Ford and Nav are under contract together until 2112.
That's 5 model years.

Where do you get "Caterpiller" as "own"?
Unless I was sleeping and Bill Gates bailed out Ford last night, Did Ford aquire Caterpillar?
Having said that, Ford is on the brink of financial disaster, and are in no position to fund a diesel engine program of their own.

Re: 6.4 Will be 2 - 3 Year Run!

If this is true, the prototypes would already be on the road for testing. The 6.4 was originally in an 02 PSD as a prototype. This was before the 6.0 was available in the PSD to the public. I made mention of the twin turbo PSD back in Oct. 2003 HERE

I thought that Cummins announced a deal in 2010 with a major manufacturer? This seems like a more reasonable rumor...

Re: 6.4 Will be 2 - 3 Year Run!

well i have seen a test unit from both gm and ford with a cat engine in them it is actually not a cat engine it is a perkins as cat owns perkins caterpillar them selves do not build a small enough engine this is why a perkins was used they were actually quite quiet whe i heard them the gm product was a yukon with this test unit in it before the duramax was used and the ford i seen was in an 03 excursion both engines looked different than each other gm was single turbo nad excursion was sequential turbo both were inline 6 cyl engines now this being said why would either manufacturer not try different engines as they are availible in their medium diuty truck line ups anyway just not with all the emission's b/s on them when you order a 650/750 ford you can get numerous engine options same with a gm topkick so if it will fit i am sure they will always be testing it in other applications . You do not see peterbuilt , kenworth , volvo , ih, freightliner , ect using only one engine either so let's face it they will always be playin rumors will always exsist as to what manufacturers are playing with in their pick ups i am sure they even play with some of the foreign ones as ford makes a diesel focus in europe these topics will never change it just intrest's people when one choice engine comes into production

Re: 6.4 Will be 2 - 3 Year Run!

I highly doubt that International will be gone with or without problems. And there is no way I would believe Ford will be building their own diesel. I have read that it cost $100 million to re tool for the 6.4. Assuming that is close to accurate I doubt ford is in the finatial position to do that.

Re: 6.4 Will be 2 - 3 Year Run!

Greetings,

I would not put much faith in any of these types of people or what they say.

Information from one guy that is not out on the news wires.?

I can only guess that this guy, along with 1000's of other crystal ball jockies are just out there saying what ever comes into their head. And possibly being paid to work a few specific lines.

Having worked at large companies I always find it odd that the companies that I and my buddies worked for were always very closed mouth about things that were up and comming. Confidential, Secret, and Top Secret. Confidential was not public knowledge. Secret was on need to know basis only. Top Secret was Executive mgmt, project mgmt, etc. and was on need to know basis only. Heck, people did not want to know as it makes it even more difficult and dangerous to trade stocks on the company(s) involved.

You either worked on new projects and were told to keep your mouth shut or you did not work new projects and knew nothing to tell. Not to mention the NDA's one signs to get the job and more along the way, etc.

Seems like it is either the name of the game, FUD, or garbage. I would have to believe that a diesel engine and contracts with vendors, etc. are pretty well under the radar. If you have the info you would not share it, period. If you did not you might be told to spread all sorts of missinformation.

Peace and Blessings

Re: 6.4 Will be 2 - 3 Year Run!

if it is going to happen it will have to happen when fords contract expires with international which i believe is in 2010 when coincidently there are stricter diesel emmision regs...which could potentially be 2-3 years...in addition to more cost associated w/ emmisions it might further be increased because of the relatively short run

Re: 6.4 Will be 2 - 3 Year Run!

Supposedly the 6.4 can be updated to the 2010 EPA regs without major modifications.

Sounds like something someone from marketing would say. New engines or not, every one of the mfg'ers has a huge job in trying to meet the '10 regs. The '07 ones are tough, but pale in comparison to what's coming in the next few years.

As for the Ford/Nav contract, it runs through 2012. Not that contracts can't be broken, but Ford is no position to fight a protracted legal battle.
