posted his at powerstrokenation and powerstroke.org as well. The cab is going back on on tuesday and hoping to get any info before it does. You may have already seen this post but here it is again on this site.
Recently purchased a 2009 f550 6.4 powerstroke diesel bucket truck with only 103,000 miles on it. I have been researching for a month now and learned that i need to do a lot of things to make it reliable. The dealer i bought it from put a brand new re-manufactured oem short block (with new oem oil cooler) and two brand new re-manufactured oem heads. Off to a good start.
It is currently at my mechanic right now with the cab off getting the following: New oem high pressure turbo, Mishimoto radiator and new cap, ELC coolant with sinister coolant filter and coolant flush.
Bulletproof brand: water pump, egr coolers (both) and half oil kit with remote spin on filter.
Dpf-r plus tuner
Cab insulators, glow plugs and harnesses, valve covers and gaskets, serpentine belt and ac serpentine belt, two new fuel lines to cooler (they are frayed)
transmission service, new fluid, filter and pan gasket
ac recharge.
new power steering fluid
The tuner only adds a mild 70 hp. I do not need any more than this. this is a 15,000 pound bucket/boom truck and my only concern here is not performance but rather extreme reliability and better mpg. I use this every day for work and will sometimes be pulling trailers that can weigh anywhere from 2000-9000 pounds.
Here are my questions:
1. Does anyone know if the new re-manufactured engines (made late 2016) from ford direct have been upgraded to address some of the major problems they had when made originally in 2009? Did they fix the valve guide problems and actually harden the valve seats this time around? any other things they might have done to make the engine more reliable?
2. Is there anything else at all i should or could do while the cab is off to increase the reliability of this truck? right now is the time to do it and i want to do everything in my power to ensure that i have 10-20 years of good service from this vehicle. Once i have it back i am going to maintain it religiously, oil changes with oem filters every 5,000 miles, new oem fuel filters every 10,000 and maybe even a new air cleaner every 5-10k. I will flush the ELC coolant every two years but change the coolant filter every 6 months. Also i am using motokraft cetane boost at a 7 point increase every time i fill the tank (first one i found, is there a better brand?) I will also be emptying the water drain valve at least once a month.
3. Should i open up the water drain valve and clean it with brake cleaner?
