6.4L Has Aluminum Heads!

I just received my copy of Truck Trend in the mail and on page 28 The specs for the 6.4L says alum heads...

After reading the article I really think this engine/Truck is gonna be awesome!

Why did they stay with the 5 speed auto and not upgrade to 6 like GM and Dodge?

Chris

They are not aluminum heads. My god these writers are clueless. This writer probably drives a prius. This is why i don't watch the doom and gloom senario that plays out on the evening news on a daily basis.

the torque shift is a 6 speed auto but only uses 5 this is determined by the computer and trans operating temps as well as loads it has been this way since 2003

Re: 6.4L Has Aluminum Heads!

Aluminum heads isn't really a bad thing. Everyone thought it would be a problem with the duramax but I'd say that it has been proven with high hp and torque numbers.

I had a Dodge minivan with a 2.5L 4 cyl in it that had an aluminum head. Replaced the head 3 times on it because of problems. According to the mechanics, if you went over 80,000 miles you were due to have problems with the heads. With cast-iron blocks and aluminum heads, the expansion rate is different, and the head tends to "creep" in relationship to the block. Eventually you get a blown head gasket at best. If you overheat them, the head is usually toast.

Like the other poster's said, that magazine writer was putting out bogus info.

Re: 6.4L Has Aluminum Heads!

I looked this up on the Motor Trend website out of curiosity and ended up finding something else I found interesting. It was a spy photo of an F350 SRW CC with what was supposed to have a V6 4.5 liter turbo diesel sourced from International with much improved fuel economy. I'm new to this site, has anyone else heard anything about this?

Well the 4R100 was a 4 speed, so 5R110 is a 6 speed? Doesn't make sense since the 4 = 4 speed, R = Rear axle drive, and 100 = 1000 Newton-meters of trq rating = 738 ft-lb to us Americans.

[/ QUOTE ]I assure you there are 6 forward gears. If my memory serves me correctly the actual 4th gear is a 1.08:1 ratio and actual 5th gear is 1.00:1 while the 6th gear is OD. As said before, the computer decides which "4th" gear to use in acceleration while both "4th" gears are not used sequentially.
