Made the round trip from College Station, TX to the LRGV (about 700 mile round trip) this past week. Pulling a tractor and equipment on a 24' lowboy gooseneck so it's not like the thing was way up in the air. The land is also flat as a board for the southern half of the trip. Truck has a little over 4000 miles on it. Is this what I should expect out of this truck as far as fuel mileage? I can't go but 250 miles and have to stop for fuel!
Btw, it pulls great, but at 7 mpg it damn well better!

I got about 8-8.5mpg towing a 22,000lb Teton fifth wheel, that is 13.5 feet tall. Towed from Maryland to Wyoming. Hills of PA,western MD lowered that to 7.5 with a 7 degree climb up the Cumberland Pass. I did drive at 60mph, used the cruise control as much as possible. My truck is equipped with the 4.88s, while steep, I think when towing, the engine is not working as hard as a 3.73/4.10 truck with the same load, road speed. Now that I have 13,000 miles on the truck, have replaced the fuel filters(they get filthy quick), installed the big Job2 air dam, I get 13.5mpg unloaded on the highway. Towing our smaller Sunline 30 foot, 12klbs fifth wheel, saw 10.5mpg, same mileage as the 2004 F-250 6.0PSD.

Get an auxillary fuel tank and you won't have to stop as quickly, but be prepared for one BIG fuel bill when you fill up with 100 gallons of fuel though. 7 mpg seems like it's on the low end of what I've seen around here. I avg. about 9 - 9.5 towing 12000 fifth wheel on flat terrain. Good luck with your mpg... I haven't found the answer for that yet!!

I am towing 19,000+, total combined over 29,000 and I have been averaging at this point 8.5 at 60-65. I have been driving it a 55 and it goes up to 8.9 till I get off the highway, then it goes back down. Turned 11,000 miles a week ago. I have the 430 rear and carry an extra 50 gallons of fuel. Hope that helps.
That is why I bought a low mileage 04 yesterday instead of another 08 for my small construction company.
The 04 was loaded out, with 40k miles, and $22k. Put the 13 point warranty on it and get 3 and a half years of warranty up to 200k miles for $1,500. It'll also get a solid 2 mpg over the 08 I purchased in Feb. No more new trucks for my business until they sort out the fuel economy. I'm even unhappy with my 6.7L Dodges. Oh well, a sub $500 truck note is nice!!

tell me about it: I needed a mere $408 and change to fill up both tanks early last week. And they weren't even empty :-(
That means filling both tanks costs $700.00 in parts of California! I got enough diesel in Barstow to make it to Las Vegas and then filled up there to save some money. Going the other way I fill up near Kingman, Arizona to avoid paying California diesel prices.
(sorry, not much 6.4L in this post). For what it's worth I also get 7 mpg when towing.
And yes, I have two locking gas caps... I wonder how many people do too?

Seems like others get the same mileage with much bigger loads. I did have a reflash done about a month ago. I need to get the number for it because a guy on here wants it.
It better go up as the engine breaks in, this is rediculous. It's a shame really, because otherwise the truck is just phenomenal.

We have been getting Ford Powerstokes since 2004 (Govt. Bid). I have had a 2004, 2007 and now a 2008. I pull a 13K trailer that is pretty aerodynamic but we run a lot of gravel and we run hard (speed never under 70). All our trucks are ExCab SRW 3.73. From my experience pulling the exact same trailer over the 25K miles each srping, the 2004 which was a manual, got between 8 and 10 with an occasional 11. The 2007, our first auto, dropped about 1 mpg running about 7.5 to 9. I think the auto downshifted when pulling a hill or very strong wind more often then I would with the handshaker. The auto made the truck a much better pulling truck.
I have just over 10K on the 2008, with all but 400 miles with the trailer in tow. This is by far the most powerfull work truck I have had. It is a great towing truck but the mileage dropped again. The best towing mileage I have gotten is 9. I have generally ran 7 to 7.5 with several lows just above 6. This truck rarely downshifts and pulls high gear very well. I have been running 500 - 700 miles the last couple weeks. Many days the fuel cost would be just under $400 a day.
A coworker also recieved a 2008 SRW but his is a CrewCab. He pulls alittle bigger loads but within the SRW rating. He is running 4.2 - 6 mpg. He has 8K miles on his. We are going to add a second tank as 150 miles range in the Dakotas does not cut it. I have a 50 Gallon axillary on mine.
These are fleet trucks which we pay a group rental rate. When getting below 5 mpg the cost of the fuel alone is exceeding the cost per mile we pay.
The one and only time (so far) I towed my toy hauler, I averaged 7.9 mpg (hand calculated) and my average speed was 65 mph. I'm getting ready to go on a 10 day trip so I'll see how I do on mileage and report back. Probably won't be so good because a lot of it is interstate and I tend to have a heavy foot. I'll keep my speed around 70 mph though.
