Ok, so Aug 08 I am looking for an F450. I was choosing between a local northern Virginia Lariat with every option except Nav that had 30k miles. Asking $40k, got them down to $35k. There was a new Lariat truck up in NY with a manual transmission, which I really wanted, lowest they would take was $45. I decided I couldn't justify the extra $10k, plus I sort of needed the truck soon, so I got the local one. It has been absolutely trouble free and I love the truck...except I have been kicking myself ever since for not biting the bullet and getting the manual truck. So...
I am thinking about selling my truck and getting a manual. This would probably incur some serious out of pocket expense for me. I have not seen any used Lariat Manuals for sale, only a few XLT's. Checked the whole country for new unsold 08 and 09 manuals, none available. Ordering a 2010 you can only get the manual in XLT.
Now, I really don't care about the Lariat stuff...I am fine with an XLT. But I am wondering if I am crazy for thinking about doing this. I want the manual because I like shifting, have more control over gear selection than an auto, better fuel economy, and I am worried about the auto's longevity.
If you made it through all of the above, any thoughts would be appreciated...expecially if you know someone with a manual that might want to sell/trade!
I asked myself that same question. In this economy who pays 69K for a vehicle when your a middle income boomer? The answer that i kept coming back to was I have wanted it for 3 years.. i saved for it and had a nice trade with the sale of my 02. it is me that has to be happy and make sure that the payment or any other incurrance does not eat me alive in expenses.
The bottom line is it is I who will live and love it more so than anybody else.
If you want it, and have all your ducks in a row. The only thing that is stopping you is what
go get that spirited philly and make her your own!!

I agree with Neversweat7. You only live once and if you can swing the increase in payment, then get what you really want. Life is too short to have regrets. And like they say Earn some and spend it ALL!! It's only money and the government has no problem printing more for us to go in-debt with. hahaha

Yes you are crazy. Nobody can shift better manually than the computer controlled transmissions of today.
Flame away!

I don't think it has anything to do with better shifting. I think it has everything to do with minimizing the number of things that can break and increasing the overall longevity of the truck's life. If this is the reason, then I think it's a crapshoot. :-)
I, for one, don't think that there's any value in such a thing, though. It's a personal call.
