Another MPG question @ high Altitude

Considering buying a 6.4 08, currently have 04 GMC Duramax ( 10-12 towing /16 city/18-20 highway). Love the new Fords, but MPG figures are a concern , what are realistic fiqures for a 250 Crew Cab, Auto trans w/ 3:73 gears, they seem to be all over the place, any reasonable aftermarket Mods to improve mileage, someone living at higher altitude like Colorado (5000' and up).

Thanks for any imput

Turbo charged diesel engines of any make are very little affected by altitude. Any aftermarket changes are frowned upon by Ford. The 6.4 mileage is not good but the truck is so great that one just lives with it.

I live in Boulder and am close to you. I get 14.5 all around and 16MPG going between Cheyenne and SLC at 70MPH on the passes. Pulling a 26' enlosed car hauler I'm in the 9-12MPG range between Denver and Las Vegas on I-70. I've travelled with a friend that has the same weight trailer and a new Cummins and he gets almost the same mileage. I don't have direct DMax experience but it should do better as the truck weighs 1000lbs or so less.

For all the discussion about mileage with the new PSD I've netted out to a couple of things:

It's about 1-2MPG worse than my 6.0 and 7.3. I think all the new versions have paid a price for the emissions. I really like the Ford but if I could prove the Dmax would get 20% better mileage I would probably give one a try.

I estimate it costs me about $800 year more in fuel for my 6.4 vs. the 6.0. Not insignificant but more than worth it to me for the extra throttle response and lack of smell and noise.

Good luck with your decision.

BoulderGT3 thanks for the reply, your info. was very helpful, I've seen preople posting 20 MPG and others posting 6-8 MPG, which was a little alarming, I can live with your figures, I've heard the 08 GMCS are about the same, maybe a few miles better, but I like the ford better. Thanks again for the intelligent reply.

i have an f250 CC. 3.73 4x4:
here's my numbers:
Average hwy/city mix 14.5
Average hwy towing 9.5

keep in mind that my numbers are from a "flatlander", not alot of hills to speak of around here. i don't think the altitude will affect the mileage.

Very close to my figures! And altitude makes little if no difference....
