Anybody Have 6speed Manual Noise 08 F-350

MY 08 diesel has a manuel 6 speed, 10,000 miles, about 3000 miles trans started making knocking noise when you let clutch out at idle, ford dealer says it is gear rollover? sounds like a bunch of crap to me. does anyone else have this problem?

I had that in my '96 F350 460 5-SPD,they told me the same thing. I'm sure I have it on my 7.3L,but it is not as noticable do to the louder diesel.

I have almost 15,000 miles on mine, and I noticed that noise right off the bat in SEPT. The dealer and friends told me that is normal. I have noticed that when its loud, if I leave the stick in N, depress the clutch and quickly release it, the noise all but goes away. I can say that I have no issues with the trans, aside from being stiff when cold.

I test drove one the other day and it was quiet, but I wouldn't worry about a little noise. It is the same VF-6 tranny that's been in Ford's for years, isn't it? The ZF-6 is known for growling on takeoff, but it's a solid tranny.

Don't fret- they all do that. There's alot of mass turning, when you let the clutch out, it'll "clack" a little, no big thing. You can actually hear that on a 6-speed truck going down the road- it's normal. Be aware, though- A u-joint going bad will start quietly and gradually get worse. You hardly notice it, and dismiss it as "normal". Before you know it, your yoke is chewed up. This happened on my '02. When you get 40K on the clock, regularly check all of your u-joints. They're junk, and fail quickly. Replace them with heavy duty GREASABLE u-joints.

Thanks for the tip on the U-Joints. I will make that a point. When do you think ball joints should be changed on these new ones? This is my first Ford pickup, so I read a lot on here but have not seen such a post. Thanks!

Same thing here. There is a TSB for this neutral gear roll over. I can make mine go away by letting out the clutch slower. I have noticed that if I release the pedal quickly, it'll go to knockin. If I release it slower or release it while I am still rolling, the noise is usually not there. It's a tough trans though!

I just lost both u-joints in the first section of my rear driveline @ 9500 miles. Going to get it balanced, think thats why transfercase is vibrating some. Factory has 6 large balance weights on that section none on the middle section and 2 small weights on the last one.
Changing to some redline synthetic in the trans first chance I get, couple gears are still really tight to throw to.

I can remember the sound I think you're referring to. I had it on both my '02 and '04 I think, too long to remember them both. Never had any transmission or driveline issues with either of those trucks.

I'd like to go back to a manual and most likely in a Ford, but I'm enjoying the 18-20 mpg I'm getting the Dmax too much to change. What is everyone getting for mileage with their manual 6.4L's?
