Check my sig- same truck as yours, NEVER a problem getting a load moving. I don't experience turbo lag at all, the truck shifts smoothly, 6.0 mating with the 6-speed is no different than the 7.3 was. I just ordered my 6.4 stick- I wouldn't have it any other way.

Luke: Try idling in low on a two-lane road in stop-and-go traffic with a long line of yuppies behind you. It's priceless. The one behind you will freak out because he expects to see brake lights blinking like a strobe. The rest of them will become irate because you leave a 10 ft gap between you and the car in front of you, and he can't stand it that he may get to his destination 2 seconds later. I love it.

jpb: I just ordered my 6.4. I asked the dealer about the 3.55 changeover, he knew nothing about it. I made sure my rig is getting 3.73's.

I drove sticks for my first 18yrs and after 3yrs in an auto would never go back. Back in the days of 3and4 speed autos you where way better off with a stick. Now that Chevy has made everyone else raise the bar we have auto transmissions that can take the punishment of towing. I used to make fun of my older friends with autos, now I'm one of them.

Yeah, I know the autos are easier to drive, and 2 of the Big 3 have very good ones, and I may go to an auto when I get older. What worries me about my stick is that I do very dangerous work, and it is very possible that I could sustain a leg injury that would preclude driving a stick. Still, especially with my current 6.0, I can get my truck off the line in a BIG hurry- it launches quickly even without revving and dumping the clutch, and, when I yank first gear from granny, my truck will squall my 35's on dry pavement. I also get immediate passing power since I can select the gear I want to pass in. As I said above, I never see turbo lag. With my experience with this engine/tranny combo, I get power right now under any conditions.

I like my 06 stick shift. It's not that bad when you get used to it in freeway stop and go traffic. My opinon.

There was a time also that autos went longer between repairs then manual shifts. That was a industary fact. Not something I'm just coming off with.I have a buddy with two Fords with the ZF tranny. One a 351 4x4 club cab 150 and the other a stake body dually with a 460.Both have less then a 150k.The 150 had trans bearings go out last year, needed overhaul, clutch, hyds etc.The 460 truck now is in the same boat, needing bearings etc.Thats NOT that many miles for somewhat cared for trucks. We live near the ZF plant and he found/was told about a ZF employee that does trannys on the side fix the first one. He'll get the dually by spring to do.
i was unaware that ford put the zf in a f150. all the ones i have been around [5spds] were mazda tranny's .

Friend told me it was a ZF.Said it was the same trans as in his 460 stake body. Its a 351 club cab 4x4.The gentleman he knows that works at the ZF plant did the overhaul. They are his trucks so I'm going on what he said.

ordering a 6.4

Good to see other people on here that can use a stick! I am looking at ordering a new 6.4 250 FX4 CC LWB with a manual, however I can't find any pictures of what it will look like in the cab. Of course there are no dealers that have any to look at and I can't even get a straight answer as to if it is the same shift pattern as the 2002 7.3L manual. If someone on here with stick in the 2008 could send me some pictures or let me know where there are some, it would be greatly appreciated.

Fellas, thanks again for all the info. I changed the order to a manual today and added back the available components of the option packages I lost in the switch. Tony

You will lose your in-dash cup holders, and, as far as I can tell, auxiliary cab heaters won't be available, either. Those of us that prefer sticks are second-class citizens. We're expected to fall into line and get automatics, since that is what "everyone" else wants- "everyone" being Joe Yuppie. Soon you won't be able to get coffee anywhere but Starbucks, and Bud Light will be the only beer on the market.

I have a stick in my 08 for hauling heavy at low speeds on ski resort and cabin propertys. Even in 4 low an auto will heat up and die with this kind of abuse. I would use an auto if I could keep the tranny temp down below 230.

Job 3 trucks will have the auxiliary heater, regardless of transmission, as an option.

I'm sorry, but you're wrong. I just had my dealer try to change the order on my truck, and the supplemental cab heat is still not available with a stick shift.

I hope you're right. I'm going to bounce this off my dealer again to be sure. Also of concern to me is the axle changes. I don't want a 3.55 gear with my 35's.

As mentioned before, the hard core manual guys will swoop it up fast! I already have people lined up to fight for my truck when I'm ready to sell it....besides, who cares about re-sale, get what you want, not what everyone else wants....
Who are you ordering your truck from and what did they ask of you (deposit? signed agreement?)?
