Bedplate leak fixed now engine is making clicking noise?
Bought my '08 6.4 new 12/07. Now have 33K showing without any problems until 32K. New radiator, hoses, degas bottle at 32K and bed-plate oil leak (kin to open heart surgery) fixed at 33K, all under warranty. I've noticed a clicking noise that I have not heard before since getting it back after the bed-plate fix. Not the standard diesel clacking noise but metallic sounding click. Had it back to the dealer and he said it was normal diesel noise. I've been driving Ford diesels since '90 and never heard a loud clicking noise like this before on any of my last two 7.3's or even this 6.4. Any ideas?
6.4L DIESEL ENGINE TICKING / TAPPING NOISE
Publication Date: September 9, 2008
FORD:
2008 F-Super Duty
ISSUE:
Some 2008 F-Super Duty 250-550 vehicles equipped with a 6.4L diesel engines may exhibit a random engine ticking / tapping noise that is most noticeable when engine coolant temperature is 185 degrees F (85 degrees C) or higher and from base idle to approximately 1500 RPM. Some customers may complain that this noise becomes more evident after 3000-5000 miles have accumulated on the vehicle or after an engine oil change.
ACTION:
Follow the Service Information.
SERVICE INFORMATION
The ticking / tapping noise is most noticeable at the rear of the driver's side front wheel well. 6.4L Powerstroke Diesel engines exhibit this normal audible condition (some engines will exhibit greater audible noise due to engine build variations). 6.4L Powerstroke Diesel engines are manufactured to tight tolerances in order to meet strict durability and reliability standards.
This noise is caused by the relationship between engine block, crankshaft journals, bearing inserts and oil viscosity / film. This relationship allows a pulsation that resonates through the cylinder block and is heard as a metallic ticking noise. This condition is present on all diesel engines.
Technological improvements and overall noise reduction in today's diesel engines make this issue seem new when in fact it was masked by other noises on previous engines. Other engine manufacturers report similar conditions in their diesel engines. Vehicle testing and engine tear down analysis have confirmed this condition will not effect reliability or long term durability of this engine.
Dealers should not attempt to perform vehicle to vehicle noise comparisons. This may lead to incorrect conclusions and ineffective repairs.
NOTE: DO NOT ATTEMPT REPAIRS FOR THIS NORMAL NOISE CONDITION. REPLACING THE ENGINE OR INTERNAL COMPONENTS WILL NOT REDUCE OR ELIMINATE THE TICKING / TAPPING NOISE. PLEASE PROVIDE THIS BULLETIN TO CUSTOMERS THAT INQUIRE ABOUT THIS CONDITION.

Thanks Senix for the info. Per this TSB it's normal, but I never heard the noise until they did the bedplate leak repair. I guess something changed when they put it back together to make the clicking noise louder than it was before. Now I have bigger problems. After I took the truck in to get all the loose wire bundles secured, block heater wire reconnected, and crimped coolant hoses rerouted to their proper positions I drove it about 40 miles total. Now the truck is sitting in the driveway with a puddle of oil underneath. Seems to be puking out of the front of the engine somewhere. I figured if the tech couldn't get the hoses and wires back in their proper place I wondered what else was wrong that I could not see looking under the hood or from underneath. I guess I will call a rollback this morning and get it back to the dealer for some more shade-tree mechanic work.
Yeah, I responded to your other posting. I will have it towed in. I would also get ahold of Crystal here on the board with Ford Cust svc. She can tell your correct dealer (provide that) someone of the history of what was done originally.

Senix, I have a call to my local dealer now. The service writter is setting up a rollback to come and get the truck. Waiting for her return call now. With the sloppy work ethics displayed by Mountain View Ford I don't think I want my truck taken back there. I, like yourself, pull a fiver with my truck, that's all I bought it for, that's why after five years of ownership it only has 33k miles showing. I've kept the maintenace up to the extreme, like you should with a 6.4, now I have a truck that I'm unsure of on the long haul because of less than shade-tree mechanic work. Especially under heavy load pulling a fiver over these southeastern blue ridges. I need to know if this engine was put back together correctly. Just got a call back from the dealer, rollback is on the way. Talk later when I find out something.
Rollback took my truck in this morning. Put the truck on the rack at the local dealer and it appears the front seal has blown out. Their mechanic is supposed to finish his certification this week with Ford on the 6.4's so it will sit until he can work on it. I refused to let them take it back to Mountain View Ford and let their less than shade tree "diesel tech" work on it and screw it up any more than what it is now. Mountain View had it for 26 days for the bedplate oil leak and now Moss Motors in South Pittsburg, TN will have it for a week or more to fix the problems Mountain View created. The 26 days is not counting the two days Moss Motors had it putting the wires and coolant hoses back where they were supposed to be after Mountain View Ford was finished with the bedplate. We will see what happens now.
Talked with Ford Cutomer Service via telephone yesterday and was told FOMOCO would only cover the cost of the front seal replacement if it was a factory defect. They (Ford) would not cover it if it was installed incorrectly. If I let my local dealer do the front seal and the seal is found to be installed incorrectly I would be liable for the expense because my local dealer would now be a third party. I guess the truck will have to be towed over to Mountain View for rework. Probably will be another 26 days before I get it back. Bummer. I've high-jacked my own thread with another problem so this will be my last entry for this discussion. When finally get an end result I will start another thread if I still own this truck. After decades of loyal Ford truck ownership it may be time to sample other brands.

Hi there,
I wanted to touch base with you and see how things are progressing. Additionally, I want to do some research into your case; send me a PM with your VIN, daytime phone number, and full name. I'll start investigating!

As of this Monday the truck was still on the rack at my local dealer, not the dealer that repaired the bedplate leak. My local dealer now has a certified 6.4 tech and he is determining what let go in the front of the engine. I have sent you the info you requested via PM. Thanks for looking into this for me.

Hi abubba1,
Just a heads up - I responded to your PM. Thanks for reaching out to me!
After another 10 day stay at the dealer my truck is back home again. They replaced the front crankshaft seal on the engine this go around. Need to put some miles on the truck to see it everything is going to hold together for a few more miles. If any new problems surface I will start a new thread if I need help. Hope I don't need too. Thanks for the help Ms Crystal.
