belt chirp when cold??

when i start my truck in the morning or anytime after it hasnt ran for a few hours, i hear a chirp, sounds just like the belt chirping from my past vehicles. is there a way to fix this, i used to just spray silicone on the belt and it went away, i dont want to half way fix a brand new truck. is there something the dealer can do with waranty work or something??

thanks, MIKE

Re: belt chirp when cold??

My truck does it. Here is the TSB on it:

"Belt noise on cold starts:
Some F-SuperDuty trucks may exhibit a chirp or squeal noise on cold start-ups. This concern is currently under investigation. Verify that the belt is not frayed and is tracking true, and there are no obvious pulley concerns. If no problems are found, do not attempt a repair at this time. Broadcast Message 7055, SSM 19707."

mine does the same thing...i'm pretty sure it's just the belt. when i pour water on it, it stops. it's very annoying to hear that chirp on a brand new truck. i'll probably do the silicone thing as well!

Re: belt chirp when cold??

Mine chirps too. chirp. . . chirp . . . chirp. Its loud but I don't notice it later or maybe i can't hear it in the cab. I dont' think its hurting anything but it didn't sound like that when I got it.

Re: belt chirp when cold??

Wee had the same problem on the Army HMMWV fleet, it's the belt rubber coumpound. Once AM General was notified it was annoying people they worked with Gates, changed the compound, and the squeeking went away. Sooo in a way, the interm Ford answer is correct. If it works, do nothing at this time till we get back to ya

Re: belt chirp when cold??

I had the same problem and had the belt and idler pulley changed under TSB 07-23-09. No problem since (knock on wood). The pulley needs to be changed with the belt or the problem will be back in a few days.

Re: belt chirp when cold??

I had the same problem and had idler pulley changed under TSB 07-23-09 on the first trip to the dealer, which did not fix the problem. On the second trip to the dealer - they had it for 3 days, called Ford, finally replaced the belt. That was about 1 month ago - no problems since.

Re: belt chirp when cold??

Same here. I've discovered it too.

I don't even have 500 miles on my new truck. I discovered the annoying belt-bird-chirp this morning. The temp is about 45 degrees outside, and it is very windy.

I just hope that this is the worst thing that ever happens with this beast.

Other than the chirp, this badboy has been great so far! Of course, it's too soon to tell yet.

Thanks for posting the TSB. I might spray the belt with some silicon first. Then, if or when the chirp returns, I will bring the truck in for the fix.

Re: belt chirp when cold??

The belt squeak and chirp is getting worse. I just rolled the first 500 miles on my new truck yesterday. The belt squeak and chirp sounds horrible and has become extremely annoying.

I sure hope the dealership's service department doesn't have to hang on to my brand new truck for more than three days to get the TSB done? I guess I'll just have to wait and see.

Does anyone know if the cab needs to be lifted off the truck in order to change out the belt and idler pulley?

Re: belt chirp when cold??

It's been almost two months since I had the belt and pulley replaced and I haven't heard the chirp since (knock on wood). It took the dealer about 3 hours to do the whole job. The cab does not need to be removed.

Jason, thanks so much for the quick response. I am taking the truck to my local Ford dealer's service department tomorrow morning. I really need to get this annoyance cleared up. That squeal and squeak...squeak...squeak is driving me nuts!

Good thing they don't have to pull the cab.

Thanks again for the info.

If they had to pull the cab for that I'd die laughing.

Re: belt chirp when cold??

I am at 9500+ miles and no squeek yet...I hope it stays that way. But one squeek I do have is my accelerator pedal. It makes this really annoying squeek every time it moves when cold. I know better than to take it to Ford...its just cold. They don't drive it at 5 am when its -5 deg do they! So, I just turn the radio up
