Black tips and white smoke

Our truck runs great, tons of power, lousy milage; same as everyone else.
I have been reading all the posts and my wife booked the truck in for service because our exhuast is just coated with really deep black soot (worse than our 7.3L with cat removed ever was) and shoots tons of white smoke at times during regen. Enough to completely obscure people driving behind us.
Now we got the appointment to get it checked because my wife insisted but the manager says sooty exhuast and white smoke is normal.
So what is the final verdict from all you out there. Should the exhuast be clean or dirty and should the truck smoke during regen?
I have 18K km's on the truck if that matters.
Thanks,
Rob

dirtyharry, my truck has had black tips since day 1 also and the my service writer said it was normal also. It is not normal, the tips should be as clean on the inside as they are on the outside. I never pushed the problem though because the truck runs great, gets around 14 MPG here in the hills of WV so I figured it it ain't broke, don't fix it. I probablly will get the DPF replaced later before my warranty runs out though. Mine did do the white smoke thing a few times but I'm not sure if it was regen. Example: Cruising down I-77 (WV Turnpike) at 70 MPH, stop to pay a toll and when I pushed the go pedal to get back up to speed it would belch white smoke and also felt like it was missing. If I let off and then get back on it, it would straighten out. It done that probablly 4 or 5 times in 6 months. I took it in last December and told the service guy what it was doing and they did the reflash. I have not had the problem since. I have about 18,000 miles on mine right now.

My tips stayed very clean til around 6k, then they started to get black. I cleaned them and they got black again. Once I had the white smoke that lasted for 3 days. It quit on it's own and has not smoked since and I now have 11.5k and I just noticed the tips are clean again and I haven't touched them. My mpg's have not changed through all this. 13 - 14 around town and 16 - 17 on highway, unloaded.

I really shouldn't pipe in here since I do not own one of those new monsters,
but any 08 Diesel with a black exhaust pipe has a problem. Nothing normal about it, listen to your wife...just this once
