I bought a new 08 f250 cc 6.4 long bed on oct 1st with 7 miles on it, then put 400 quick miles on it. I then had an event to go too in vegas and was towing my car trailer and car (6200lbs) Oct 3rd, and about 120 miles into my trip the trucks check engine light came on and then there was no gas pedal action. I was almost hit by a 18 wheeler in the process and was nearly run off the road. I was able to get off the freeway check the truck to see that there was NO smoke NOTHING leaking, and idling perfectly like nothing happened. The truck was driveable, at 50mph with minimal boost, then occasionaly there would be no throttle, then i would have to pull over shut the truck off then on to be able to do 50mph again. I made it home parked my car trailer and then dropped off the truck at the dealer (was now able to go 80mph). I have yet to hear whats wrong with the truck but I guess we will see tomorrow.
I have never heard of your situation, usually when the throttle stops responding, you are in limp mode and you can go now where. I would say that you towed a trailer a little bit too early, and the truck could have been saving itself, but that is just a guess. A tech should reply to your post and give you some specific examples. Either way, it sucks you are having a problem. By far most owners love their truck, and have minimal issues with them.
Sorry to hear this and you're an unlucky guy as the 6.4 has proven a great engine thus far. 407miles should have been enough to tow a farly light weight. Hopefully it was just a faulty EGR, exhaust gets very hot. If it's something more serious then push for a new engine and don't let them off light. Speak to a lawyer.
I was contacted by the service advisor today from vista ford in woodland hills california, where my truck is at.
He stated that there were some sensors odered but he is not sure if that will fix the problem???? He also said that he thinks he will have to call in a local engineer to check the problem because it looks like a wiring problem that they cant find.
Then the service manager called five minutes later and said the opposite stating that the sensor would be put in and should be up and running tomorrow.
Sounds like im getting the run around and like they will try and screw me somehow. Im going back in a hour or so and will DEMAND a new truck.

I have a 08 F250 that had the same problem. The dealership replaced the exhaust temperature sensor after running several tests. My truck was going into the "limp mode" also. It's been a month and I have not had any more issues.
I can vouche for the new 08' 6.4 F-250 cause I just bought mine in September and before it hit 300 miles, I hooked to a brand new 12,500lb 5th Wheel and towed it from North Carolina to Iowa(1,300 Miles through the Blue Ridge Parkway)! I didn't have the first problem I did experience the bad fuel mileage, but I hear that takes a little while to come around. I drove the truck moderately, but pedal down and was very pleased whith its performance. I know this don't shine any light on your issue, but maybe it will help you make your mind up with what you want to do.
Technically there is no such thing as a "limp mode" for the 6.4L or at least not as I would think of it. There are a couple of conditions with the engine controls where the PCM will de-rate the engine (reduce power) to prevent damage similar to what CMB430 suggested. When one of the EGT sensors in the exhaust after treatment system reads too high the engine will have reduced power. If the sensor reads over 1750 degrees due to actual temperature conditions or a defect in the sensor the engine will shut down and you will not even be able to crank the engine for one hour. Once the condition corrects itself the engine should run. If the sensor is electrically open or grounded the engine will likely not start. There have been a number of EGT sensor failures discussed in my forums and I have personally changed 4 or 5 myself at this point and EGT 1-3 seems to be the one that commonly fails from what I have been able to learn. Is it likely your truck has a bad EGT sensor? It is possible. I hope this makes sense as I just woke up and the coffee has not hit bottom yet.
Good Luck!

As far as towing to early, my guys pick them up at the dealer new, go to the yard and load up the 11' work bodies with tools, hook up to the trailers and load up the mini excavators and down the road they go. They generally run them hard at least until the warranty is up.
