It's too late for me as I purchased a truck over the weekend without this option, but I'd like to know a little more about it. They claim it is very effective in heating the cab quicker during the colder months. Living in Alberta Canada that would be a blessing.
So, I was hoping someone could elaborate on the feature, how it works, and is it something that can be added after the fact or is it required that it be installed during the building of the truck.

My understanding is that it's buried up against the firewall inside the cab, as part of all the climate control system ducting... which would make it seem harder than most options to add after the fact...

I have it and it works off of the normal temperature control knob. It provides heat almost instantaneously enough to clear foggy windows and warm the cab much quicker than my 2003 6.0 and 1999 7.3 even after having them plugged in over night.
By the sounds of it, it doesn't look like it's something you can add in after the fact.
Too bad, would have been nice in -40!

I think it is an electric resistor grid installed in the heater box, reason that the extra capacity alternator is required. Comes on very soon after start up, giving you warm air much faster than waiting for the coolant to heat up. I am in Maryland and after driving a truck with it on a cold day, I called my dealer and had the option added. I find it very unusual that a truck sold in Canada did not come with it. Just too nice of a new option not to have and it doesn't cost that much to boot.

Do you recall what it cost to have it installed after the fact?

I think he meant he had it added to his in-process order... his sig says he doesn't have his new truck yet.

What I meant was that originally when I put the order together I thought it was an unnecessary addition. Then I got a chance to drive a truck with the option and heated seats. I quickly called my dealer back and added both options. I really do not think it would be possible to add the supplemental heat after the truck is built, at least economically. I think the whole dash would have to be removed to get at the air box plus the higher amp alternator would have to be bought and installed and any necessary heavier wiring. Probably best to wait for the next new truck you order, it will probably come with microwave heating to roast our innards. Cost I am sure far higher to add after the build than ordering it before build.

While I am in the south and really don't have the cold days that you guys traveling in the tundra (not the toyota) do - I did not order (but did get heated seats) and instead opted for an autostart on alarm - with turbo timer cool down. I can't tell you the number of times I got and will get $h!+ for allowing cool down on my truck after a long road trip. It is what it is.
My thinking - is it wise to drive prior to a decent warm up? I can suffer for a little while with heated seats or let it idle breifly to get the heat I want.
I am quite aware of potential problems with extended idling. Been there and done that. I am going to work with the installer (already installed) to see if I can combine high idle with auto-start. No hurry as we are entering the AC months.

It is an electric heater. Element looks very similar to the element of a ceramic bathroom heater only shaped flat and rectangular so it can be inserted into HVAC housing in airflow next to heater core. I would think it includes a higher output alternator or maybe even an auxiliary alternator.
Volvo and maybe some of the other premium Ford European brands have used this in diesel engined models already but not in their gasoline US models that I know of.
