Can't build F350 Diesel w/4.30LS ?? - I was wrong - you can.

Hello all,

My family is looking to buy an F350 to tow a large 5th wheel. Looking at the Ford 2009 RV trailer and towing guide the truck I want is an F350 Diesel with a 4.30LS axel ratio. (see picture)

But, I can't build a TD F350 with a 4.30. The Ford site doesn't allow this configuration to be built.

Is this possible?

2009 Towing guide, Fords build and Price page on their site is showing 2010 models which no longer have the Tow Boss package which is what got you the 4.30's with the diesel in a 09.

430 Ls

I built our 2009 F350 at the dealership in March of this year with the 4:30 gear ratio. Couldn't be happier with the performance. Pulls anything, anywhere. Have you contacted your local dealership to see if you can build your truck as you want it? Maybe a dealer can do something for you that cannot be done on the Ford website.

Why not just get the F450. It is standard with the 4.3 LS and you get bigger brakes.

I own one so let me at least mention things I'd be concerned about: Insurance, local property taxes, tags, who do I trust working on it. Answer those for your situation/location & go for it! I find this topic interesting because our local Ford dealer will only carry the F450 in inventory for dual wheel pickups (and it's been this way for just over a year).

Is there a way to change the axle ratio from 4.10LS to 4.30LS after I buy it?

There is a F350 at the dealer near me that has one with everything I want but comes with a 4.10LS instead of the 4.30LS.

Forgive me, I don't know anything about trucks/cars. I'm getting a crash (sorry) course!

I currently have a 2009 F350 with the 4.30 ls rears and am very happy with the towing. I only have 1400 miles so far but this thing is a real towing machine compared to my 2002 f350 7.3 which by the way I really liked. The lack of noise is something else also. Oh yeah I got my 09 off the dealers lot. He found it for me and brought it to his lot.

As I understand it, the 350 with a 4.10 has the same final drive engine rpm's as a 450 with a 4.30 due to the larger tire size (32 inch diameter on 19.5 rims) on the 450.

My 2009 F-450 has 4.88 gears... I'd love to have a set of 4.30s under it because it feels like it's reved way too high at 60 MPH for what I'm towing (30 foot enclosed car hauler). Also, the 450s ONLY come in Dual Rear Wheel set up. One other thing to watch for -- replacing tires isn't that easy. My Ford Dealer in Utah couldn't replace the tires by OSHA regulation. It seems they have to have a special tire changing station with a steel safety cage around it to mount the tires. They had to take my truck to a couple different places before they could find one who could do it. AND, they weren't that cheap either!

Chalk this up to one part bad interface, one part user error.

You CAN built an F350 with a 4.30 - you just have to add the Tow Boss package ('09 or '10). That was my part - I didn't read everything about each package and missed this.

The bad interface (build your own interface) part is that you can't select the 4.30 from the start - making it look like you can't get a 4.30. You just have to continue past the start and then add the Tow Boss.

Thanks to all who replied - because of you I was able to figure it out knowing the it COULD be done because you own an F350 w/4.30.

My question is if you order a F-450 with the tow boss package do they still use 4.88's because I remember everyone saying they were not going to use the 4.88's in the F-450's and only use 4.30's. I remember the only way to leagully tow 24,000 lbs. with the F-450 was to have the super low 4.88's.

You need to check the 2010 ordering guide when (or if) it's out. For the 2009s, F450 pickups with 4.30 and auto tranny got GCWR 33,000 & tow rating of 24,000 lbs. Tow Boss (listed as Trailer Towing Package on our window sticker) was standard on ours. Can't say for the cab/chassis versions. David
