Cetane Booster

Question. I have several bottles of Cetane booster left over from my 02 Diesel. Can I use it in the new 08. Thanks.

Re: Cetane Booster

Because it does make a difference here especially in the winter.

Re: Cetane Booster

It should say on the back of the bottle, whether it's certified for use with ULSD,I know all bottles of Power swevice Diesel Kleen I have bought for the last 8 months or so say it's compatible.

Re: Cetane Booster

How much of the cetane do you use per fill up or per gallon of fuel? I am getting my truck back after EGR cleaning, turbo replacement, EGR cooler replacement, new head gaskets. The EGR valve was all gummed up. After doing some research on fuel additives found that Cetane was very important for engines that had EGR'S. Have you used cetane since day one ?

Re: Cetane Booster

The bottles I get from Ford say they treat 125 gallons. Don't have the bottle in from of me, but believe it is 6 oz per 25 gallons. There are hash marks on the bottle though.

Re: Cetane Booster

Here's what the Cetane Booster & Performance Improver lables say on my bottle which I use in our 99.5 7.3 and have since the new ULSD came out earlier this year:

"Stock Number PM-17-A * FIR No. 174524"

"4 oz of Cetane Booster treats 25 US Gallons of diesel fuel." (20 oz bottle treats 125 gallons as mentioned by Sequoia)

"This diesel fuel additive does not comply with federal untra-low sulfur content requirements for use in model year 2007 and newer diesel motor vehicles or model year 2011 and newer diesel non-road equipment engines"

Everything else are cautions to not use it in mixed drinks along with emergency numbers and First Aid Treatment in case you do.

Re: Cetane Booster

What cetane rating are you trying to achieve in the fuel. The pumps where I fuel say it contains a cetane rating of 40. What does Ford suggest?

Re: Cetane Booster

That rating is ok. I was just asking if the additive helped. Next time I fuel up I am going to look at the specs on the pump.

Re: Cetane Booster

I also bought two bottles of Cetane booster from Ford. That's what I'm using right now. The service Dept suggested it will help because of the ULSD. The shop foreman says it has an additive in it that helps.

Re: Cetane Booster

Larry, most of the pumps I have checked do not post a cetane rating. This 40 rating is at a Kangaroo (truck stop)station.

Re: Cetane Booster

I don't know where everyone is getting their info, but ULSD has a natural Cetane index number of about 3 to 5 higher than LSD. I don't know why it would be as low as 40, but the refinery I worked at put out 46. If it is below 45, I would use Cetane improver.

Here's a little tidbit of info for you about Motorcraft diesel additives....

There are 3 flavors: (used to be only 2, Red or Blue caps)
PM-17-A (<span style="color: #CC0000">(Red cap)</span> Cetane booster and performance improver for 6.9 7.3 & 6.0 engines
PM-22-A <span style="color: #CC0000">(Red cap)</span> ULSD compliant Cetane booster and performance improver for 6.4L PSD (backward compatible as well, and will replace the 17-A in the near future)
PM-18-A <span style="color: #000099">(Blue cap)</span> <u>Anti Gel</u> and Performance Improver (cold weather additive) ULSD compliant and compatible with all Ford diesels 6.9 - 6.4

Re: Cetane Booster

Forgot to mention that I have used the 17-A in my 6.0 for over 50,000 miles. The stuff works great, less cleaning of the EGR and actually a slight improvement in MPG (almost 2MPG). I put about 6oz of the stuff in at fillups from empty.

A lesson learned: this stuff really stinks, is hard to pour the first half without spilling some and is hard to wash the smell away. I portion out 6oz into little containers we use at work for oil samples, and carry those in the door pouch.

Ford recommends a minimum cetane rating of 45 for the PSD's.
