Talking Changed Fuel Filters.

It's been about 10,500 miles since I changed my fuel filters. This was at 41,000 miles on the truck. Filters were remarkably clean. I bought the truck used with 29,000 miles and changed the filters soon after. They were pretty dirty then. I don't think they had ever been changed.
I did the job in right at 20 minutes and avoided the diesel shower. I waited for the draining to stop completely. I learned my lesson after the first time. Give it a couple of minutes to drain.
I cycled the key 8-9 time after the filter change. It started and died. I cycled the key 4-5 more times and it cranked and stayed running.

good deal. when I change mine the fuel cutoff is very sensitive so I have to hold it down while cranking to get it to prime.

It is good to know that the fuel you have been buying is fairly clean!

I think 10,500 miles was too soon after seeing how clean my filters were. I will probably go to 15k on the next change.

Owner's guide says to change them at 20k miles (I think they even specify engine hours) for normal conditions. You might not fall into that category, but from what I've seen on these boards, few people actually follow the manufacturer's recommended maintenance schedule.

I pretty much follow the recommended maintenance schedule, I just mostly use the severe duty one. I'd rather waste a couple $k in extra oil and filters over a 20+ year vehicle service life than risk early problems with a $60k truck. Since I do my own service, the lack of labor charges probably makes the actual cost in line with the normal service schedule for dealer service anyway.

Filter Change

[quote=senix;1803879]good deal. when I change mine the fuel cutoff is very sensitive so I have to hold it down while cranking to get it to prime.quote]

I just had a problem with mine. After I changed the filters and represurized the system per the manual, turning the key on six times for 30 seconds each time but the engine wouldn't run. It would start and die after a few seconds. After doing this for about an hour I gave up and called AAA. The guy showed up to take it to the dealer and said let me try. He cycled the key quickly a few times and it started and ran fine. How do you hold down the fuel shut off to get the engine to prime?

Open front passenger door, right on the side of the dash is door to open and then the switch is right there.

This cutoff switch is designed for crashes and as you can see...it is sensitive

So much depends on the fuel you are getting. I do mine every 10k. For the cost of injectors and an HPFP, I don't mind the filter price at all.

10-15k miles what I suggest. A fresh filter is cheap insurance.
