changing the fuel filters

i want to change my own fuel filters and need to know if there is anything important i should know before trying this. it doesnt say much in the owners book. i heard somewere something about bleeding the air out and what not, how much fuel will come out when changing the main filter, i know on other gas trucks when i changed the filter gas came spewing out, is this a problem with these. any help would be great, or if someone can point me to instructions somewere that would be great.

thanks, MIKE

Re: changing the fuel filters

I changed mine on the 03 I had and got it all put back together and the engine ran extremely rough. I called the dealership and they told me the engine was sucking air through the caps of the filters because I did not have the right amount of torque on the caps when I re-installed. After the dealership re-torqued the caps the engine smoothed out and ran fine. This is the only item I know that is of any importance.

Re: changing the fuel filters

When you change the filter on the frame rail, first drain the fuel out like you should be doing monthly. It will be a few ounces ( 6 to 8). The fun part it taking the cap off. It can be difficult until you get past the o-ring.
The filter on the eng is the same just bigger. A personal preference, lubricate the new o-rings before installing the new filters.
Read the owners manual, I am pretty sure it tells you the cycle the key on for 30 sec, then off and back on three times to make sure the filter bowls can fill back up with fuel.

Have fun!!! 1 3/8 socket/wrench the torque in listed on the cap.

Re: changing the fuel filters

There is a special bleeding procedure that must be done with a 6.4. It's in the Ford service information either online or on the dvds.

The key needs to be cycled at least 6 times, then bled. Then cycled again before starting.
