Checked out an '08 - It's quiet!

Local dealer had one, and being that he's my friend he let me check it out. Man they are quiet. So much much more quiet than my 6.0, and I thought that was quiet. Its hard to describe, its as quiet as a gasser with a slight diesel sound.

I would prefer more diesel noise, but I suppose thats the way the market is going

The one thing I was dissapointed about was that I thought it was supposed to be a "new" Super Duty. It's more of just a refresh... New grill, headlights, tailgate step(whoopdy doo)

All in all seems like a great truck though.

There must be a few of them getting out now. I heard one today also. Sounded just like the D-Max to me. Bares absolutely NO resemblance to any International diesel engine I have ever heard. None, nada. I sorta liked it. I could not get them to spool it up.

I was just reading the new Diesel Power mag, test on the f-450, sucker runs 42psi boost and the turbos are sequential Borg Warners. Siemens common rail, 6-hole piezo injectors.

First of all, this post is not intended to be taken as I am saying they are gonna fail, rather I would like to know what Ford came up with to keep headgaskets from blowing. Anyone know? I would say that boost was a HG killer on some 6.0Ls, but there are a lot of other factors that are associated with that (head and deck surface, combustion temps, actual boost pressure, CP, etc.) also. The reason I ask is because the 6.0L boost levels are usually around 29-33, maybe 34, but these 6.4s will be running the same boost levels as Top Fuel dragsters. There has to be something if Ford thinks they can control this amount of pressure. Can you effectively add boost and power while keeping CPs in check? Seems to me that the most available power will be from the highest CP you can safely achieve.

Later,

6.0L already had MLS head gaskets. The 6.4L are slightly better.

FYI - Head gaskets issues on later 6.0Ls are much improved.

6.4L also has different water passages in the heads and a stiffer crankcase.

Re: Checked out an '06 - It's quiet!

16mm headbolts for the 6.4L they are larger. Multi-layer head gaskets, beefed up material on the heads themselfs, stronger internals, they say only the camshaft is left from the 6.0.

Re: Checked out an '06 - It's quiet!

It's still the same old 1998 truck on the outside, and that's where they really needed to update.
I like the new truck, but they should have changed up the sheet metal.
