Chrome Exhaust Tips Job 2 Trucks

Those of you that have the chrome package from job 2 have you noticed the discoloration of the chrome tips to what I'm guessing is the temperature reached by regens? I took a laser thermometer and the temp at the tip was 350* during my last regen.

Before I ordered the truck I had this concern and one poster indicated that the tips were going to be stainless steel due to the fact that chrome will discolor in extreme heat. Well, I assure you that the exhaust tips are not stainless steel but rather chromed steel.

I wounder if is this will be covered under warranty? And if so, how much tear down will the dealer have to do to replace the tips, as they are welded to the exhaust pipe... Not to mention that it's going to happen again.

The tip is chromed T409 stainless.
No problems here.

George, have you looked at the "fins" that catch the cool air? Mine are discolored.

That's interesting that the tip assembly is stainless, I didn't know that... Will that help with the heat?

Re: Chrome Exhaust Tips Job 2 Trucks

Parcours,

Another tidbit you might find interesting is that the entire exhaust is T-409 stainless, and they have been for many years. As far as S.S. helping with heat, I doubt it has a significant impact on heat transfer, it's mainly for long-term durability and corrosion resistance.

Hope it helps,
K.N.

Re: Chrome Exhaust Tips Job 2 Trucks

T-409 isn't the high quality, high dollar chrome like T-304 that you see offered by Banks/MBRP and others.
T-409 has less nickel, will rust up and discolor, but it rarely rusts out. It's a major improvement over the old fashioned steel exhaust that would fall apart after a year.

So, after chroming the tip, it should last as long as the truck.
There may be some internal discoloration, but as long as the outside still looks good, who cares.
Mine still looks showroom.
