So I am coming up on my first oil change. Been doing research to see what type of oil I would like to use. Local Sam's Club has Rotella 15W40 that is CJ4 compliant but I was thinking about going with 5W40 because I really do not haul or tow anything. Am I correct in thinking that the 5W40 would probably get me better gas milage than the 15W40? Also the only 5w40 I have found is Amsoil (I know the debate on the CJ4 rating) and the others are synthetic. Am I missing any regular 5W40 CJ4 rated oils? Also read some where that you should not put synthetic in before 10,000 miles due to seading issues. Is this correct?
I used Delo 15W-40LE "Low Emissions" CJ4 from Wal-Mart.
If there is any debate or question on CJ-4 DPF compatability, don't use it. I'll switch to a synthetic as soon as one becomes readily available, and on the shelf at Wally world.
George is right. Delo or Rotella T 15-40 are both great oils. You won't realize any mileage benefit from synthetic, but many of us use synthetic in the winter for easy starting.
5-40 syn, if you choose to use it, is great for severe duty, hauling, etc. As George said, just make sure whichever you choose meets the API and viscosity specs for your engine.

You would not be able to measure any mileage gains from the type of oil you choose. Some on the TDS forums have stated that they changed ALL their fluids to synthetics and did register a change in mileage. I am a natural skeptic about that. Consider you are driving a fairly low geared vehicle with a road weight over 7000 pounds and the aerodynamics of a large brick, and it doesn't seem that you could change much of that by changing the type of oil you use, especially because the dino lubes are so darn good now.

I like Syn oils because of their temperature tolerances. In the dead of winter, you can count on easy starting and instant lubrication. In the summer, no matter how hot it is, I know the viscosity won't break down, especially in a turbocharged engine that sees a higher temp in the turbo bearings.. I feel more confident in engine cool down times before shut off.
I run Syn in everything, especially my air cooled motorcycle..
Right now, our choices are very limited. So, it is extremely important to use a "Low Emission CJ-4 oil. I'm sure we'll see an "emissions" Syn by springtime, Until then, it's Delo LE for me..
DELVAC-1 ESP CJ-4 is a full synthetic. I just bought a case last week from the distributer. Have to check around to find it as not all the dealers are stocking it since it is so new. I noticed a difference in my TDI jetta's mileage between that and Rotella dino. Since there's time till the next change I wonder if anyone who used it can let us know about the mileage.
I put the Motorcraft CJ-4 10W-30 in at my 3K miles oil change. From Napa I purchased the AMSOIL CJ-4 5W-40 that I will put in after my 1K mile trip this week. I did all the research and there are less than 4 oils available to us now.
On a side note, I went to Ford in Sept about the 5w-40 and they knew nothing about it. They called International who knew nothing about it, and they will not have a part number until 08. That will not be synthetic either. Run the AMSOIL. I know guys with Cummins and that is all they run with great success. Next week I will join the ranks.
I don't know anyway that the viscosity of a 5 weight dino oil can be stretched to 40. And if I found some, I would run away from it. Even 10-40 dino oil is stretched too far to make most oil people comfortable.
I have to believe that any API rated 5-40 oils are synthetic, partially or otherwise.
Side note to the Delvac user, I found the Delvac synthetic to be extra-ordinarily expensive.

Has anyone heard of American Lubricants? I have been told that they make really good oil. Not aware yet wether it is CJ4 compliant. Just checking to see if anyone knows anything about them. It is there synthetic that I am thinking about using.
I have been using Schaeffers Full Syn 5w 40 since about 10,000 miles.I also installed a bypass filter set-up.Schaeffers oil was very good combating oil shearing in the 6.0l.To each his own.
