Clunk in automatic transmission

Anyone else experiencing a bad clunking/popping noise with their automatic transmission when moving the gearshift lever from drive or reverse into park. My dealer only sells trucks and they diagnosed the noise as a popping noise and is characteristic of "driveline windup" being relieved. The tech consulted with the hotline and they said they have no reports of this concern and it is probably normal. Tech stated he did try other trucks and they did the same thing. If I move the gearshift lever really slow the noise is not there.

I know these trucks have a lot of torque and put a lot of strain on the driveline when stopped but this noise is really loud and is very annoying. Sounds and feels like the transmission is going to fall out. My truck is also 2wd.

Re: Clunk in automatic transmission

I would guess they have no reports of it because other trucks don't do it. My transmission goes into gear quietly. There is definately nothing I would describe as a clunk or popping sound. If I were you, I would take my truck somewhere else. Good luck.

Mine does the same thing. No problems encountered as of yet. I have over 3800 miles.

Re: Clunk in automatic transmission

I’ve noticed this but I think it only happens when I park on a slight incline. I believe it's just the parking pin engaging in the transmission. If pin and transmission aren’t completely lined up it will make a popping sound when it pops into place and the sound echoes down the driveshaft. I could be wrong but it makes sense to me and so far it hasn’t hurt anything that I know of.

I think you're right!

To prove it, when you park on an incline, when you're parking put the trans in neutral, set the parking brake, release the service brake, and then put it in park. When you are leaving, do the same procedure in reverse.

Re: Clunk in automatic transmission

I park on inclines alot, and if you slowly release the brake pedal after you put it in park, it will allow the parking pawl to slide in slowly, which makes that noise almost unnoticeable.

On a side note, my Grandpa complains of a similar noise with his '08, only in his driveway, which has an incline where he parks.....
