Cold Starting -28 C

I live in Edmonton where the temperature this morning was -28 Celcius with the wind chill factor.Minus 20 without it.I'm not sure what that is in Farenheit. All I know it was really Cold. I didn't plug my truck in cause I didn't expect it to get really cold overnite.I figured well Ford really brags about this truck starting in cold weather. I'm gonna try it.

I couldn't believe it. Turned over fast, started right up and no smoke, noise or anything.I was super impressed. And I'm only using Rotella T regular DIesel. Not synthetic.Way to go Ford.

Re: Cold Starting -28 C

-20C is -4F. Windchill doesn't matter to a truck. Windchill is an estimate of how cold bare skin feels. Trucks don't have skin.

Thanks for the conversion. I would never attempt to start my 02 Diesel in -20 C.I still can't get over how easily it started without complaint.

Wind chill of -28 C or -18F makes a big difference as to the truck starting IMO, because you wounldn't get me out there to do it! LOL

Re: Cold Starting -28 C

Hey Mountie,

You'll notice these trucks start MUCH better than the diesels of old. The big thing I have noticed is prolonged exposure to temps in that range. A single night where it dips that low, then shoots back up to -5 over the next few days is nothing. It's when the high is -18ish over a week that the truck will start to feel it.

Having said that, I started my 03' in -35, unplugged without a problem. It let me know it was unhappy but in a pinch it started!

True that windchill doesn't count if your truck is just parked there overnight. If it is plugged in or you shut it off and plan to come back in a reasonable length of time then the heat dissipation of increased windchill does count

Re: Cold Starting -28 C

Mark,
I repectfully disagree. If the ambient temperature is 32 degrees, the oil in the oil pan will thicken somewhat. With that same 32 degrees, but with the wind blowing across the oil pan at 10 mph, the oil should thicken up faster due to the cooling affect of the air/temp ratio (the windchill). Am I wrong? maybe it's not 'windchill' as we think of windchill, but it is the same effect.

Re: Cold Starting -28 C

It will cool faster, but it will not cool below ambient.

Let's say you have water in a container where it can't evaporate in an ambient of 33F. There is a very strong wind so that the wind chill is -15F. Will the water freeze?

Hint: NO! The temperature is still 33F. If the water was above 33F when you put it outside it will cool to 33F faster than if there was no wind, but it can't get below 33F.

Re: Cold Starting -28 C

mountie, do you have the supplemental cabin preheater? If so, how effective was it at those temps?

Re: Cold Starting -28 C

Yeah I do. It takes about a minute to get going but it sure works nice when it does. It's minus 20 outside again this morning. With no wind. It's been minus 20 every morning for the last few days. The way this trucks starts right up you'd swear it was summer. And I'm only using Rotella T 15w 40 right now.

I've also been using Fords Cetane Booster with additive as well.

Re: Cold Starting -28 C

This is me weaping in total envy. I elected to buy mine off the lot because of time restraints and it did not have the supplemental heater. Blows my mind that all trucks in this neck of the woods don't come equipped with it.

I've enquired into having it added after the fact. Let's just say you don't want to go there.
