Dad's 08 Blew a Head Gasket!!!!!!

My Dad was on his was back home from a long trip back east and his temps started going up. He pulled over and checked the coolant and it was low. He thought it was coming from the radiator so he topped it off and got back on the road.

He checked it 100 miles later and it was only a little low so he decided to keep it topped off and head on home. When he got to Flag it started running rough and he lost all boost.

He call for a tow truck and we had to run another truck up to Flag to get the trailer. The dealership had the engine torn down and confirmed it blew a Head Gasket and all the cylinders are scored and the turbos are shot.

They have a new engine on the way and the truck should be ready for pick up in a week. My Dad has another move back east and is going to use old faithful (his 95 with over 600K miles on it).

He new truck has about 80K miles on it although this truck has been worked hard it has never been abused and is maintained very well. Looks like some of the 6.0 issues are still around

I'm a little skeptical that it blew a head gasket. More likely it had a bad radiator, which lead to an EGR cooler failure. The tech could have misdiagnosed it as a head gasket.

From what I've heard, a new radiator doesn't mean much. One can blow in a month. I hope he didn't run it hot and fry the head gaskets that way. With cast heads, that would be difficult unless you were oblivious- and I'm sure your Dad is not.

I would bet it is related to a radiator failure. And I don't think there is any new and improved radiator, only a little vent or something you can install in one of the lines that is supposed to fix the problem.

If his truck went into a regen without a good supply of coolant I could see how something devasting like this could happen.

Cannot speak for the one above but, I can speak for my buddies.
My buddy has an 08 F-350 that just blew the head gasket. He was pulling his enclosed with the racer in it. He was loaded down pretty good but, nothing extreme. After about 2 hours in the mountains, poof, head gasket gave in. I sure hope Ford got smart after the 6.0 issues with the bolts.

We haven't seen any head gasket failures with the 6.4 - I will temper that with a "yet" though I will admit that this has been Fords best ever diesel launch....

As for the radiator conumdrum.... Ford now has us installing a venturi tube at the time of radiator replacement - I am led to understand that pressure spikes in the cooling system are to blame for radiator failures. Sorry, I don't have the TSB handy so you'll have to take my word for it....

It's not a TSB, its a Special Service Instruction (SSI) 08T01, and Special Service Message 20339.

SSI 08T01:
http://www.motorcraftservice.com/pub.../12/R08T01.PDF

Special Service Message 20339:

2008 F250-550 6.4L DIESEL RADIATOR REPLACEMENT VENTURI TEE INSTALLATION
SOME 2008 F-SUPER DUTY 250-550 VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH A 6.4L DIESEL ENGINE MAY REQUIRE A RADIATOR REPLACEMENT. AFTER FOLLOWING WORKSHOP MANUAL (WSM), 303-03 AND THE RADIATOR HAS BEEN IDENTIFIED AS THE CAUSE OF THE COOLANT LEAK AND IS TO BE REPLACED, IT IS NECESSARY TO ALSO INSTALL THE RADIATOR/VENTURI TEE SERVICE KIT 8C3Z-8B379-B. USE THE INSTRUCTION SHEET PROVIDED WITH THE KIT FOR PROPER INSTALLATION OF THE KIT.

Since you have decided that we shall not mince words...

08T01 is a Field Service Action..... This is Ford-speak for a recall.... The term "special service instruction" isn't something that get's used a bunch - even though TSBs (technical service bulletin), SSMs (special service message), Broadcast Messages and Field Service Actions could ALL be considered as special service instructions....

One might have to pardon my oversight.... I try to make sure we run OASIS on everything that comes through the shop... Unlike some, I do not have the spare time to spend trying to embarass or emphasize the shortcomings of other participants....

It is when we run OASIS that we can discover any "open" recalls on a particular unit.... These will show no matter what we input as "concern codes". To see any particular TSBs or SSMs we need to input "concern codes"... this could be as simple as any DTCs retrieved during testing... or it could be more general (there are several drop down lists for rather generic concerns).

Broadcast messages are rather tenuous.... akin to an "interoffice memo" they will sometimes turn into a TSB, SSM, a change in service manual(s) or something similar.... Occasionally a broadcast message will include the instruction " engineering is aware of the concern - do not attempt repair at this time". Obviously, engineering is scrambling to find a cure that works without costing megabux.

Gooch... if you would spend half as much time being productive as you do trying to embarass me. TDS might have something... Give it a rest before you "have the big one".

Relax Grampy and take the information I posted for what it is. If I wanted to "embarrass" you, I would've done a much better job. You "embarrassed" yourself by trying to explain yourself with all that rambling.

I'm simply helping owners out here...if they take your advice and look for a "TSB" for this, they're going to be disappointed.

SSI-08T01 is a SSI - Special Service Instruction, not a TSB.

SSM 20339 is a SSM - Special Service Message, not a TSB.

FSA (Field Service Actions), Recalls, TSB (Technical Service Bulletins), BCM (Broad Cast Messages), SSI (Special Service Instructions), SSM (Special Service Messages), and whatever else you want to discuss are not one in the same...they all have their special purpose at Ford. You, the master of sarcastically criticizing others here, should know that. As for OASIS, SSI-08T01 clearly states, "you must use OASIS to determine if a vehicle is eligible for this Special Service Instruction."

Give it a rest Grampy. You should've taken the information in my post for what it was. TDS could do without your babbling.

Grampy- you have been the most useful source of info on this site. There are some other good sources (Ford Doc), but you seem to be present more often. This site would suffer greatly if you got upset and left. Please feel free to ramble on as much as you want- I'll read every word.
