My brother recently bought an 08 F350 which is equiped with a tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS). Good in theory, bad in practice.
Does anyone know how to defeat/turn off the TPMS? He wants to be able to run less air in the rear tires without being driven crazy by dash lights/alarms.
Thanks,

Steve,
I feel your bros pain. I have had nothing but bad luck with mine.It gets cold and the idiot light goes out.I adjust pressures,go through a bunch of turn key on 3 times recalibrate the tires, then light goes out.Great deal till it gets colder the next time and the same crap again.
From what Ive been told you cannot bypass the tire sensors because it is a federal mandated safety device.I could be wrong but that is what Ive been told.
Jim

TPMS is only federally mandated on F-250's, although Ford has chose to make it standard on all SRW F-350's as well. At this time there is no way to disable or adjust the system.

I spent nearly 30 minutes reading his owners manual thinking that I'd find which fuse controlled the TPMS circuit. No luck. Plan B is to remove the sensors and hope that there is no chimes, bells, or whistles to go along with the dash light. 80 PSI in the rear tires of an empty F350 is BRUTAL!

Unfortunately "Plan B" is a waste of time and will not give you the results you desire. Leaving the sensors in and running the pressures you desire will give you the same result as taking them out. Eventually the truck will start to "remind" you if your do not take care of the light in the dash.
The only solution that I have seen work is to build a tube out of PVC that you can pressurize and put the sensors in that and keep it in the vehicle.

When I took delivery of my 08 the dealer, unbeknownst to me, had stolen the sensors for another truck. I drove it for 3 days without sensors before the TPMS light and message came on. Every time I start the truck the text and icon come up on the display. You cab clear the message but not the icon.
So you do not get chimes just annoying display messages. I'm supposed to go in next week and have the sensors installed.

Do your tires require different pressures in the front and rear and are you running the pressures that are listed on the door label?

I have been running whats listed on the door label. I cant even get the light to shut off after I turn the key off and on 3 times...

If you need different pressures front and rear you should have a TPMS reset tool (fob), if so, have you tried the TPMS reset procedure listed in the owners manual? Check the spare tire pressure also. I can not remember if sensors are installed in them or not.
If none of that helps, the dealer is going to need to take a look at it.

My companies E250 has the TPMS, in the last month we have had days in the 80s and days in the 20s, so far no warnings. But then again I think it is filled with 98% nitrogen.
You need to run a minimum of 65 psi in the fronts and 80 psi in the rears to keep the sensors from going off. If you rotate the tires, you need to reset them with the TPMS fob.

That is true on the trucks that require 65 front and 80 rear. Some trucks require 65 front and rear and do not include a TPMS fob and do not need to be reset when rotated.
