You were responding to quite an old thread. But now that you've re-opened it, here are my thoughts (I hate TPMS as currently implemented).
It depends on your MY. As I understand it (please correct me if I'm wrong), the 2008 and 2009 SDs came with band sensors and then in the 2010 Ford changed to stem mounted sensors. In 2011, a number of parameters, such as fuel tank size etc, were made available to be modified in the computer by the dealers. IIRC, this may include the Toilet Paper Monitoring System alarm levels. I suspect that Ford has changed how it has handled the TPMS alarm programming several times during this entire period.
As a hint to those who do have TPMS problems with SDs that require different front and rear pressures, such as my F350 where the plate says 65 front and 80 rear, try this: rotate your tires front to back but do NOT do any computer location change steps - just take off the fronts and swap them with those on the back. Now your sensor locations are changed and the 80# "rears" are on the front.
So, now if you don't mind running just under 70# (or even slightly less, within the the 20% range off 80#) on the front, you can, when appropriate, air down the rears to a reasonable pressure no lower than the 20% limit off #65, eg #55 range, in the rears.
Your computer doesn't know where you sensors are, just that they are within range and responding, and that the ones it *thinks* are on the rear are no more than 20% below #80 (allow for effect of colder conditions) etc.
Works for me, however the next time I rotate, I'll have to retrain the locations - but I might accidently goof and tell it the rears are on the front, etc. Ooops. BTW: it was the unthinking lazy tech at my dealer who unintentionally did that first un-coordinated front-back rotation for me. Cost me $14 - it certainly was worth it!
Just don't let your dealer/mechanic "help" you by checking your tire pressures when you stop by. "Step away from those tires, I have the pressures exactly where I want them."
Hope this makes sense,
- Don
