Re: Diesel fuel additive required for 2008 Super Duty?
No. The emissions strategy on it is not the one using urea solution added to a tank periodically.

Re: Diesel fuel additive required for 2008 Super Duty?
I know this. I have had a few mechanics tell me, and read in more then one (non-advertisement) article in a few trucking publications, to use a lubricating additive.
There is so little lubricant left in this new ULSD fuel, that premature wear has already been reported. Injectors and seals, so I have been told, are taking the brunt of this new fuel.
Now don't flame me, I am just repaeating what I have been told by more then a few mechanics, in different regions of the country. And I know my 2007 Volvo, with a non emmision 2006 530hp Cummins, runs better with a gallon of Howes additive. Which I seem to use allot of now. Never used to, even in the winter. I have never been a fan of additives other then water seperators in the coldest northern weather.
And this new ULSD also starts to gell at 34 degrees. I know this first hand. In 17 years, I have never had a truck gell up on me until this winter. I was down for 4 days, that is how long it took to get it towed into my local shop to thaw her out. My mechanic said he had never in his life seen so many frozen trucks.
Re: Diesel fuel additive required for 2008 Super Duty?
I was told exactly opposite as far as additive. The new motor is supposedly designed to use ULSD. My 6.0 is supposed to use additive. Mine is not specified as ULSD.
We have has ULSD here in OHIO and New York where I travel weekly all winter. My truck has sat out in -10F not plugged in. Needs warmed up but fuel never gelled.

Re: Diesel fuel additive required for 2008 Super Duty?
The 6.0 does not require additives..but can be used...nowhere have I read that it "requires" it..I used Power Service often in all my diesels....it does help..runs smoother and seems to have a little more pep....can't find stanadine in the local area....my.02

Re: Diesel fuel additive required for 2008 Super Duty?
The process to remove sulfur from diesel removes lubricity from the fuel. So it's not the sulfur that lubes.
As for needing additives, It's up to you. Although lubricate is suppose to be added to ULSD to make up for the loss during the desulfuring process, can we trust it's enough??
BTW, this applies to all diesel motors not just the 6.4 since fuel pumps, injectors and most everything else needs the lube until the fuel is burned.
Re: Diesel fuel additive required for 2008 Super Duty?
Never used any additive in my 6.0 and at 75K, it's still running strong. I don't think it will hurt the engine either. I just never felt the need in any of my PSD's. My 01, 7.3 I used to own has over 300K and never had any additives.

Re: Diesel fuel additive required for 2008 Super Duty?
Not much. But people have been "needing" additives ever since there were diesels. Maybe now there is a real need for them, don't know. I know a lot of people said the 6.0 would do better with additives and maybe they were right, I just never had any problems with not using it.
Re: Diesel fuel additive required for 2008 Super Duty?
The Ford maintenance video on this site, a while back stated Ford recommends using fuel with a cetane rating of 45 in the 6.4. The vidoe then went on to tell you that Ford just so happens to sell a perfromance enhancer/cetane booster for use in the 6.4.
What does the manual for a 6.4 state?

Thanks EPA!

I've already had my truck in below freezing weather (upper teens overnight) with no gelling issues. The temperature was below 30 degrees for 10-12 hours with the vehicle cold. And no this was not winterized diesel.
Re: Diesel fuel additive required for 2008 Super Duty?
It is true that the new ULSD has caused more "gelling" than what we all used to burn. However, we have learned here in our Northern Nebraska farm and ranch market, that what appears to be a gelling issue with ULSD is actually an icing problem. something about the process of taking the sulfur out of the fuel causes it to have more water in it at the pipeline and therefore at the storage facility, in your truck, or your barrel at the shop. We have over 40 medium duty diesel trucks on the road all winter delivering fuel and propane and we saw more problems with ice in the filters and fuel lines than we ever have before this new fuel came along. As for lubricity additives, Ford's own liturature ( at least on my 7.3) lists Stanadyne as the only approved additive. Mine started last Feb at -11 with no plug in and straight ULSD #2 with Stanadyne in the tank. With #2 puching the $3 mark here, the additive is cheap if it even gives a small improvement in effeciency.
