Do a Fuel Filter Change - Get a Hat from Ford

Fuel Filter Change Success! - Thanks to info on this board - Thanks!

Last week I went under the truck to perform the filter change but could not get a adjustable wrench, or a filter wrench in there (The brake line & the electrical line are right in the way) Note: - full disclosure: I'm an x-Ford guy (if you have used OASIS, SBDS, NGS, OBDII reflash etc - that's what helped create) I will contact Frank Ligon to see what his team can do going forward. It doesn't need to be this hard!

I went to HarborFreight.com and picked up a set of sockets: Harbor Freight Tools - Quality Tools at the Lowest Prices
Note: the top filter and bottom filter are two different socket sizes

and an adapter to go from 1/2" drive to 3/4"

Harbor Freight Tools - Quality Tools at the Lowest Prices

Along with the instructions previously posted here:
1. Drain the fuel / water separator and open the upper filter lid
2. Unscrew the lower (frame rail) filter lid and remove the old filter
3. Remove the upper filter lid and filter cartridge
4. Replace the upper cartridge and torque it
5. Replace the lower cartridge and replace it, torque it
6. Prime the fuel system

And now the info you really wanted: Get a free hat! (I already have one, - very nice!)

It doesn't need to be that hard.... Detail Page for 14500 Oil / Fuel Filter Socket for 6.0L Ford Diesel - Lisle Corporation costs about 14 bux here in Canada... the one size fits everything you need it to and fits a 3/8ths drive handle. The brake and electrical can be repositioned slightly so as to minimize the interference....

I bought a 36mm socket and took it to the local machine chop and had them shorten it up for me. Now I find out that they actually make them that way....
BTW the mini cooper (clown car) uses the same size socket for their oil filter.......

Thanks for the tip on the free hat. The dealer had not idea that program was going on yesterday. I think I bought a 1 7/8 in SK socket from a hardware store last year. It is 1/2 in drive. I am at work now, so my tool box is not in reach, but I know I use the same socket for the top and bottom filter lids.

Even if it only needed one socket, the worst case for me is more tools!

NP on the Hat. They are kind of nice.

CMB430......did you check the tool box to confirm the 17/8" socket?? I will be doing the filter change soon and will pick up the socket. I just wanted to confirm that's the correct size. Thanks for the info.

GoingBig.....thanks for the heads up on the hat!!

I was in the garage last night, and forgot to look. When I get home today I will open the drawer and post back tonight.

The size of the S-K socket I have is 1 7/16". That is what I use for the upper and lower filter caps. I had the wife run out to the garage, cause I forgot to look last night!

CMB430 - Thanks for checking!
I bought the filter today - $59.00 at Ford - and next the socket.....it HAS to be less than filter.

I got my new hat in the mail yesterday, and it is not a bad hat. The sweat band is nice and thick too. It is worth buying something now that you will need in the near future anyway.

I got my new hat in the mail too. It is nicer than the "prototype" had I received. It has a nice American Flag and Stiching on the brim (still made in China). Nice touches.

I received my hat on Thursday and it's great. I like the flag on the back and the bill. It seems well made and, as CMB430 indicates, a thick sweat band. This one is worth taking care of. Mine showed up via FedEx (I prefer UPS, they do better) but, what the heck.....
